G'day
I was gonna put this thread in commercial beer, but I figured you guys would know more.
This may only be a figment of my imagination, but when I drink draught (tap) beer I find it tastes slightly different from bottled. I beleive I can taste the bubbles (the same flavour for most draught ...

Emu Bitter - Help needed
G'day
I've had a couple of attempts at making EB and have not got anywhere near the real thing. I have used a recipe straight from the Malthouse website.
1.7kg ESB Malthouse Extra Bitter
1kg Beer Booster
25g PoR Hops (Quick boil pellets)
S23 Saflager Yeast.
I have placed the hops in a mug of ...

Re: Unfiltered Hops
Alright I've done a search and read up on racking as much as I could find. I still can't figure out why racking will reduce the sediment more than just leaving to settle in the original fermenter?

How long can you keep opened hops?
I bought 100gms of PoR pellets and have so far only used 25gms. I plan on using another 25gms but am then going travelling for 6-8 months. I have sealed the bag pretty well, how long can I keep the hops in the fridge before they lose their goodness?

Re: Unfiltered Hops
Thanks for the replies, If I'm racking, isn't just as easy to filter through an old stocking during the process?

Unfiltered Hops
I made the mistake of forgetting to filter my hops from my beer. The beer is now in the late stages of primary fementation. When I've tested the SG I've noticed a lot of suspended hop particles in the beer. I'm considering filtering the beer into another ferementer and letting it settle for another ...

Vegemite
I've heard it is made from the sludge left at the bottom of the fermenter. I can see how this connection would be made due to the taste, smell and colour. Is the truth to this myth?
If so, has anyone made their own vegemite from the sludge? How?

Thanks. I'll try TWOC. Bloke at Malthouse wasn't very helpful, I think I'll get info from here from now on.

Thanks. I've got an old wettie lying around, might cut that to size like you did. I didn't want to throw the wetti out, I knew I could use it for something.

Re: Boiling?
Is that a different type of hops (i.e. not teabag)? Perhaps pellets? Or will the teabags work in the same way? I'm really keen on making a more bitter beer.

Re: Boiling?
Tins of extract should be boiled if adding hops
What do you mean by this? When I've used hops (teabag style) I have placed them in a mug of boiling water and left for 30mins prior to adding to the wort. I prepared the wort to be ready coinciding with the hops

I've just been re-reading simple things that make HB better, and I spotted this:
"5) Do a stove-top boil.
Save yourself from dancing around the brewing area with a boiling kettle in one hand, a hot can of concentrate in the other, and your thermometer in your third hand, trying to wash the last of ...

Temp Variation
If the temperature of a brew fluctuates below to within ideal temp range, will this affect the finished product? I own a heating belt but don't really want to use it for fear of temp becoming too high. The temp is around 20-25 during the day and occassionally will fall below 18 (degrees celsius ...
