Re: Out of date tin

I agree with Oliver, generally it will be a bit darker and so will not "look" like the beer you're trying to brew but will taste absolutely fine. I've brewed them years out of date, making sure I NEVER use the yeast (which I never use in any case). No problems at all, done it many many times. As per ...

Re: Partial Extract

In relation to your "psssst" analogy, I have found that the size of the "psssst" on opening sometimes is not proportionate to the level of carbonation in the beer. Some big "psssst"'s can be quite flat when poured into a glass and vice versa.

Anyway, back to a real question with carbonation.
I did ...

Re: Butter scotch flavour?

Butterscotch... Yeah it was pretty butterscotchy. The only thing more butterscotchy is a butterscotch lolly.

List of things on earth that taste most like butterscotch:

1. A butterscotch lolly.
2. The beer I made the other day.
3. Imitation butterscotch flavouring.
4. Butterscotch schnapps
5 ...

Re: Out of Date Can's - The Verdict?

Out of date cans, I just inherited 12 or so different ones about 2yrs out of date, I have started 2 of them, about to bottle, I will re-post here to let you know how it went.

In my single brick tin roof shed in Geelong, the temperature varies inside the shed by quite a few degrees, due to the ...

Coldstream Brewery

Coldstream Brewery, Maroondah Hwy, Coldstream, Victoria.
(near lilydale)

Just went on a brewery tour this weekend, after a quick look at the stainless steel, we had a taste of the new "Coldstream Bitter".
A fantastic creamy english bitter, light in color, a dazzler of a Micro-Brew.

I highly ...

The Bended Elbow in Geelong is a great pub for varied beers.
Hence my interest in "grimbergen" which is a cracking drop, although at 9% you can't have too many.

Re: Anchor Steam

Ok chaps, I must now make a few points after tasting what I believe to be something made by a higher power than me. It has only been in the bottle for 10 days, but tastes like christmas.

I did not rack the brew. It was bottled after 2 weeks in the fermenter at approx 20deg.

1. Trough Lolly's mash ...

Re: Sparkling ALe?

both yeast starters I've done have been using 1 stubby.
1 CSA and 1 CPA.

500ml boiled water, 1tablespoon LDME, 2 tablespoons Dex, 1x stubby dregs.

After she's raging away after 3-4 days, make the brew and throw it in.

They've both worked very well. :D
I got a few hours lag, but both worked great!!!

Re: Anchor Steam

sorry TL, I didn't explain that very well, those gravity readings were what I measured!!
That WAS the FG! (oops? good/bad/ugly?)

I have no idea what this means as I don't have beer software.

Am just reading articles about mash efficiency calculation now.

Q. Is the yeast for the ciders ...

At the LHBS I saw this one and thought I'd give it a go.

JSAA:
Munton's Premium Blonde tin
Liquid Amber Malt Extract 1.5 kg tin
Cluster Hops 12 gr 15 minutes.
Cluster Hops 12 gr flameout.
Safale S04.

I put it on this morning, but due to the HBS not having cluster pellets, he told me to use a 14gr ...

Ok, now my only problem is that now I have a partial mash out of the way, I want to make them all partials!!!
I fear that I may have now crossed over to the dark side.

To do this would I just replace a kg of LME with 1.33kg malt grain?

(I'm using the ratio as follows, do you think this ...

Re: foams on priming

Some of my brews foam when they contact the priming sugar when filling, some don't. Hasn't really bothered me either way. Haven't noticed any difference in the beers.
