Measuring OG

Post by Pants »

Hi guys,

Did a brew yesterday and measured the OG before storing in the light box.

The temp of the liquid from memory was about 26 when I measured it and got a reading of 1044.

Should I be waiting for the liquid temp to drop before I measure OG or is that not an issue to be worrying about?

Pants to check on temp correction details have a look here:

I wouldn't be worrying when checking OG, but would definately wait before pitching yeast!
Some people say I have a drinking Problem....
I drink, I get drunk, I fall over....
What's the problem?

I agree. An easy way that works for me to get the right reading at any temp is to add 2 to the last digit of the reading for every degree above 20 (assuming the instrument is calibrated to 20C) or subtract 2 from the last digit for every degree below 20. Had no problems with this method so far and has seemed to be close to what I get from software calculated figures.

never worry about temp corection. As in the link Grab posted, it would only be 1 or 2 for eth temps we use. if it outside these temps you are doing something wrong

Thanks guys....

I probably could have waited longer to pitch the yeast, but here's hoping it should be OK.

Pants,

It'll be fine. Don't stress 8)

But next time try and pitch the yeast around 20C and keep the temperature there if you can.

Cheers,

Oliver
