How Bitter will this be?

Post by l'orange »

Hi, i know this is nice and bitter, but i was just wondering if anyone could calculate the IBU's for me...

The kit was 25 IBU to start, and a boild of the kit and malt was done for 60 minutes in about 7L for 60 minutes.

The hop additions were
5gm Amarillo @ 60
12gm Amarillo @ 30
10gm Amarillo @ 20
14 gm Cascade @ 20
12 gm Cascade @ 10
12 gm Cluster @ 1
6 gm Cluster @ Dry
6 gm Cascade @ Dry

So quite a lot of hops overall, around 80 Grams!

The other thing is how long will this beer take to mature? I am guessing that the higher hop levels will mean it will take longer to smooth out?

Cheers

There are a few IBU calculators, do a google on it there are soom ok online ones...otherwise get qbrew or something similar. QBrew is free so it's a great starting point.

Just looking at the beer, depending on the gravity of the beer, if you've used simple sugars or anything under 1.5kg LME it will be quite bitter from what I've found. I also find that Amarillo gives a harsh bittering quality even after 30 minutes.

It will need some time for the hop bitterness to smooth out, but all depends on taste too. For an APA it will probably be within the style.

That'll have a lot of flavour, but won't be that bitter. Should be a little bit more bitter than the kit.

I would say that it would be fairly bitter considering its being added to an already hopped kit, i only add about 80-90 gms usually to an AG that obviously hasnt been hopped yet

There's alot of late additions though so the bulk of the hops won't even get a chance to bitter the beer. In my experience though, 6g Amarillo for 60 and 12g Amarillo for 30 minutes, along with a kit, will make for some bitter beer.

You really think it will come out bitter? Surely 5g plus the small amount of bitterness from the 30mins won't add THAT much to the kit bitterness.
