My understanding is the APA is packed with a mix of ale and lager yeast. If memory serves me it looked different color to the Coopers original series and might have been a bigger granule size (it has been a number of months).
Did a couple of APA's back in June before buying my heatpad and was amazed that they fermented with the low temps, ambient in the garage down to 6 overnight, with the fermenter dropping to 12ish. Looking back now probably the lager yeast doing most of the work.
I did an APA, a Canadian Blonde and a Draught over the last 2 weeks and, yes, I noticed the yeast was a darker colour than previously in these as well.
