Out of date cans

Hey - havent brewed for ages and just got back into it. Had a Coopers Canadian Blonde which was a couple of years past its use by date but thought I would use it anyway. Pitched a safe ale yeast which was in date and added a Brew Enhancer 1. Topped up to 18L. I had a container of honey, I really ...

The main ingredients on the can are (reconstituted) apple juice and malt. Then there are flavours and sweeteners.

The can says to add 14 L of water to make 18 L.

What will this come out like?

2 tins of Brigalow apple cider
750g Dextrose
250g Lactose
Yeast/nutrient that came with the kits

The Brigalow says to fill up to 18 for 1 can. I filled the two cans up to 26L.

Just wondering what the popular opinion is as to how it will turn out. Im not expecting too much, but I dont mind the ...

Home Brew v Commercial

Had a competition with some mates yesterday after watching the grand final. Everyone brought round a sample of their home brew and we put it up against what we thought was the commercial equivalent.

11 homebrews later, 4 of us had picked every sample correctly which was a it disappointing, but ...

Just tasted my first attempt at Mexican Cerveza. I deliberately bottled one stubby for an early taste.

Very impressed. It has only been bottled for a week and a half... LOL.. no bubbles but she is going to be so nice.

Just wondering whether it would be better to use the sediment from a couple of beers. Just to make up yeast numbers and for an excuse to drink 2 long necks of Coopers Sparkling.

Not sure about the taste. But I got a fermenter from my old man which has been used for all kinds of things, beer, ginger beer, cider and even red wine. I used it for my last beer and it tastes delish.

When I boiled malt tonight and added hops, I didnt realise how bad hops would smell when boiled. They smell nice in the packet.

I have made:

Cascade Golden Harvest with malt and SafLager yeast. Tastes fantastic after 3 weeks. Seriously one of the best beers I've tasted. Will continue using malt. Perfectly carbonated.

Alcoholic lemonade, which tastes ok after 3 weeks. I used the recipe from this site but used 1kg of ...

I usually wash the fermenter with bleach straight after I've bottled. Then I rinse with scortching hot water. When I am ready to start a new brew, I steralize with sodium metabisulphate. I don't mind the smell and it seems to do the trick.

My lemonade has been going for 3 weeks... cant wait for it to stop.

I think I will put a cerveza in the fermenter next, just in case the smell of lemons remains after the lemonade.

Mine has been bubbling beautifully for 10 days now. Has not missed a beat. Looks, tastes and smells great. Havent taken any SG readings yet as the bubbling hasnt slowed and I dont want to waste too much!!

Thats expensive Lactose. I think I got 2kg for that amount.

has the airlock got a sharp casting edge on it? Sometimes they don't seal properly. Scrape the sharp edge with scissor blade or a file to make smooth.

It certainly has, but Im one step ahead of you. After the airlock stopped again last night. I did exactly that! Its working again.

The yeast you used likes temp between 9C and 15C http://www.fermentis.com/FO/EN/pdf/SaflagerW-34-70.pdf

could this pose a problem?

Yeah, I cant really help the temperature. It is winter in Melbourne and still without a heater, my flat stays at least 18 degrees. My flat is on the 2nd level of my ...

Thanks guys,

Wassa's comments about a leak in the seal got me thinking... I remembered when I attached the airlock to start with that it seemed fairly loose.

I just went and pushed it down a centimetre until it seemed tighter. Would you believe it is bubbling again... Something so simple.

I ...

Guys, I put on the Cascade Golden Harvest using 750g Dextrose and 250g Malt. I used W34/70 yeast.

It bubbled quite quickly for 4 days and now has completely stopped. It is always around 18-20 in my flat. The SG is 1.030 at the moment and is quite cloudy.

Is this normal for it to stop bubbling ...

I put on a batch of Cascade Golden Harvest the other day. After fastening the airlock and lid it seemed airtight (e.g. if i put pressure on the fermenter the water level went up and down in the airlock) However, I mustnt have tightened the tap properly as I woke up the next day with liquid ...

Cascade Draught

Without a doubt, Cascade Draught is my fave beer for everyday drinking (probably due to the fact I grew up in Tassie).

Does anyone know a bottleshop that sells it in Melbourne?? I have been here for a few years and have not came across it. Which seems weird to me, as Boags Draught has become quite ...
