I wouldn't recommend using your girlfriend/wife as the primary fermenter if she is susceptible to infections. But as a secondary, I think the reduced yeast would be ok.

Yeah, cranberry juice and keeping soap out of there I think will be more effective
But just so you know, you can always get into kegging; filter the beer on the way from fermenter to keg with a fine enough filter and you should remove just about all the yeast, then force-carbonate... sounds like the perfect excuse to get your girlfriend to not only tolerate, but appreciate your new kegging system!
Incidentally, the way the commercial breweries do it is:
1. filter
2. pasteurise
3. capture the alcohol boiled off in 2, and then reintroduce it afterward
4. add preservatives to stop it going off as it's no longer preserved by the live yeast
5. drink and (not) enjoy
