Windows 7?

Post by Oliver »

Anyone taken the plunge?

Any tips?

I'm just about to install it on a previously-XP box. Going 64-bit (for those of you who that means anything to :? )

Cheers,

Oliver

It's on my work laptop and I really like it.

So much so that I've delayed the purchase of my next personal computer till I can get Win7 on that.

A lot 'lighter' than Vista and an easy to use upgrade from XP.

Never used it but a mate of mine says it is trying pretty hard to be like OSX - so it must be the best MS offering yet!

I was thinking of ditching Windows, and installing Ubuntu 9 on my next desktop. I'll probably just run Windows under Linux using VirtualBox when needed. (Here's Windows 7 running on a Mac:)

btw if you have a netbook, give Easy Peasy a go:

Easy as. I am still running the release candidate with updates til I have to pay come mid-year.
Even with the few teething problems I had, it is still the best OS Windows have released to date.
Go for it.

Notable mentions are that you might have some issues with old hardware like printers etc. You might be able to overcome these with compatibility modes etc, but you also might not. You will also need a DirectX 10 graphics card and compatible motherboard if you don't already have those items and wish to have hardware acceleration (and on windows, this means viewing a jpg  ).

Good luck Oliver!

Thanks guys.

I've installed W7 64-bit and it's running really well (might have something to do with the 4Gb of RAM I added a few days before installing W7!).

I had absolutely no problems with drivers (I used Vista drivers where W7 ones weren't available) and the only program that won't work with the new OS is an OEM version of Nero. So I just downloaded Ashampoo Burning Studio 2010, which is free.

The Aero interface is very, very nice, and the whole thing seems a lot faster than XP.

It takes a little getting used to the new interface and working out where to find things, but overall it's fantastic.

I'm not looking forward to returning to XP on my work PC!

A tip if you're looking to upgrade: I bought an OEM System Builder's Version, which is a LOT cheaper than even buying an upgrade ($179 OEM v $399 upgrade for Professional version!). I got mine from CPL (http://www.cpl.net.au), but there are plenty of other places to buy it on the net.

Cheers,

Oliver

Hi Goatsby,

Yes, you can try and swear, but some words get dashes put in them no matter how you hard try!

Re Office, you should give OpenOffice a go. It has most of the features of MS Office and is compatible with most MS Office files, but is free. See http://www.openoffice.org.

Regarding the CD drive, if you can afford it, buy a DVD drive and you'll be able to burn and read CDs and DVDs. You can pick one up for less than $40. If you're even mildly technically proficient, you shouldn't have any problems installing it yourself. Google will probably reveal a host of tutorials. It's likely you'll need a drive with an IDE connector (rather than the new SATA connector). IDE connectors are about 5cm or so wide, while SATA is more like a conventional plug. If you're unsure, take the old drive out and take it with you when you buy the new one.

And finally, ditch IE and go with Firefox!

This is not exactly true and it is probably best that you don't issue challenges on the matter ;)

Hey Goatsby,

AVG Free is good. It's not the absolute best out there, but it's good because it's free. So as long as you take reasonable care (like not opening attachments from unknown sources) then you should be fine with AVG Free.

There's a thread about free software here that you might find useful: http://www.homebrewandbeer.com/forum/vi ... f=6&t=5634

To that list I'd add The GIMP, which is a free photo-editing program, very much like Adobe Photoshop.

Avast! Home Edition is also free.

Also, run CCleaner weekly to delete cookies, fix Registry errors, etc; You can also disable startup applications that slow the computer down. It's free!
