I've recently downloaded and bought Beersmith and am slowly getting the hang of using it. I just wanted to check whether I'm doing the right thing.
The recipe I've worked out is:
Black Rock IPA kit
600g dex
600g LDME
250g maltodex
plus hops
I used the equation in in the Partial Boil - Extract Brewing topic by Kevinlis
to work out that using a 4L boil I need to boil 430g of LDME.x = volume of water you will boil, eg: 4Lt
y = batch volume, eg: 23LT
z = total amount of fermentable sugars to be used in the batch, eg 3 kilos
f = amount of fermentable sugars to be used in your boil, eg: 522g
f = (x/y)*z
Different malts and sugars will yield different amounts of final solids so we can not assume 100% across the board.
Kit = 1.7 kilos of LLME which yields 78% to the batch or 1.326 kilos
LLME is another 1.5 kilos at 78% yielding 1.17 kilos
LDME at 95% yields 475g
Dex is 500g because it yields 100%
The kit has 16 IBUs
and the hop schedule I want to use is:
20g Chinook (12.4%AA) @ 20min = 16.5 IBU
10g Amarillo (8.2%AA) @5min = 1.8 IBU
10g Chinook (12.4%AA) @5min = 2.7 IBU
total IBU from hops = 21.1
plus IBU from kit=16
total IBU = 37.1
Have I done all this right? Is the IBU enough for an English IPA.
Does this recipe sound right?
Have I missed something??
Thanks for your help guys!
Jimmy
EDIT - made total IBU more clear
