What temp do you guys like to have your beer at when drinking ?
I recon you cant beat stubbies on ice in the eski.
The reason for asking is that my beer fridge is very cold & i noticed the flavours of a beer, ie Coopers Pale Ale are not as noticable untill the stubbie warms up a little. (live in nth QLD)
If the beer is too cold the esters that produce the flavour profile etc are less active. It is why when you good stuff like Coopers is actually more enjoyable at slightly warmer temps, and also why VB should be consumed just off freezing so the taste is minimised.
Additionally, some beers are designed to be cold, take a lager for example. How can you compare it to a room temp Beer
I love beer cold, colder the better, make my teeth hurt, give me a brain freeze likely why I like lagers. Chill one of those Brit Ales down and see how it tastes.
Shit beer is Shit beer. The fact that it is cold numbs the taste buds has nothing to do with good or bad. (nothing to do with esters either, you either have them or you don't since they are percieved differently by your taste buds and really are aromatic in quality) .

What I was thinking of was that we only taste four things - sweet sour salty and one other that I dont remember, but taste picks up heaps on smell. Like how ordinary does everything taste when you've got a lergy and cant smell. Most of the smell chemicals are more active when it is a bit warmer. I only know some of this stuff from watching too many doccos on telly, so I will defer to anyone who actually knows what they are talking about.
But its because the taste buds are numb that you can"t smell it, not because there are less aromatics from the esters. I can't find anything that says esters are volatile but that doesn't mean I am not full of it or anything.
Maybe there is a PhD thesis here, working out the volatility of esters.
I admit, a little goes a long way, thats why you can't get rid of them.

Can't wait until winter to tear into a few lager recipes I've been collecting. All my brews have been Ales so far as I only started brewing at christmas (Xmas=bloody hot weather) and the fermenter doesn't fall much below 20C even under mum and dad's house.
I reckon an ale needs to be a bit warmer than straight out of the fridge/esky to get all the complex aromas (usually drinking out of a schooner glass is enough to warm it up a tad). A lager, no matter how cold it is outside, is best out of the freezer when you catch it with a hint of ice floating around in it .
Bring on the cooler months with their footy and beer with the mates I say.
