What are you drinking now?
Re: What are you drinking now?
Many years ago I would have thought that Carlton Cold was a decent beer. How my taste buds have changed. If someone offered my one for free I'd probably just go with water instead.

Re: What are you drinking now?
I'm with you on that Guru, its just not great beer.
On that topic.
When VB went back to the original recipe just recently I bought a stubby with hopes it would be a malty delight, with a fresh hop spice.......hahahahahahahaaaa !!!
I was wroooooong !
One mouthful and it went down the sink !
Right now I am not struggling at all in making my way through a sixer of Tower 10 IPA from Karl Strauss.
Happy boy.

309 NZ Pale Ale from Deep Creek Brewing in Auckland. A really nice pale ale. Light bronze colour, good body and strong bitterness, without the sometimes overpowering flavour and aroma of NZ hops that you find in some beers this side of the ditch. A nice way to begin the evening, particularly given I'm still at work and it's after 6 in NZ.

Re: What are you drinking now?
Just had a Yeastie Boys Rex Attitude, made with 100% peated distilling malt. I tried this one when I was in NZ last year and didn't love it. I don't know if my tastes have changed or the beer has, but I now really like it. In fact, I may be on the verge of loving it. Unsurprisingly it's got a real whisky-like taste to it and is very smooth. My colleague (whose office we were drinking it in) thought it was quite revolting. I knew I shouldn't have poured half a bottle for him straight up.
Re: What are you drinking now?
Newcastle brown ale (newky brown). I'm sure last time I had this it tasted alright. I'm not so sure now, maybe my taste buds have moved on. My homebrew is way better, and I'm only doing kits.

Coopers pale.
Its been a while since I had one of these, I nearly forgot how good it actually is !
Also I'm with you Guru.....newky brown is on my list as one of the worst I've ever had.
Not saying it's a bad beer, I just cant stand it.

2013 Conehead Fresh-Hopped IPA from Tuatara Brewing, north of Wellington. Hopped with fresh Citra, Nelson Sauvin and Amarillo. 5.8%.
A bloody nice beer. Quite pale coloured with an incredibly strong hop flavour and aroma. The NZ hops complement the US hops nicely and there's a bit of body, avoiding the issue with some NZ beers where it's all hops and no body.

Re: What are you drinking now?
Lark's Foot Golden Ale from Sail and Anchor, part of a six-pack I won when Adelaide beat North Melbourne this season.
It's a bit of a craft beer for the masses. Slightly sweet finish but a bit funky. It's three months before its BB date so perhaps I just need to taste it fresh.

Re: What are you drinking now?
I bought a mixed 4-pack of S&A from a country Woolies bottlo last xmas (I was camping nearby). It included their Golden Ale, Pale Ale, Amber Ale & Kolsch. Everything but the amber was completely horrible....so bad that I had to put it down to poor handling...surely even a 'mainstream' craft brewer couldn't put out beers that ordinary. I haven't been able to convince myself to give them another try since, given how many great craft beers there are to choose from these days. So it's interesting to hear you found your S&A Golden Ale was also pretty funky.

Kostritzer Schwarzbier.
More like a dark Helles than a Dunkel. Looks really dark in the glass but comes on a fair bit less roasty than expected. More of a hint of roast added to a helles than a rich malty goodness like a dunkel. A hint of DMS which doesn't seem out of place in this beer. Very nice drop.

Drinking my own Dark American Lager. Is a bit meh, but I assume that's the style.
I might have a Vodka lemon lime and bitters next.

Is this because it carries your name Paul, or is it really that good. It's not even October yet...
Re: What are you drinking now?
Most of Octoberfest actually falls within September. Had to understand a nation that brews such great lagers being that impatient isn't it?Guru wrote:It's not even October yet...
And no, the Emnpaulaner brewery is pure coincidence. Swear to god. Wouldn't lie if I could.

More cider. Attempting to empty a keg on a school night is fraught with danger. At 6.8% I cant see myself winning this fight. Surely there is only 1 more pint left?

Re: What are you drinking now?
Feral's "Golden Ace". I remember having Brooklyn's "Sorachi Ace" beer at the Great Northern Hotel during their Good Beer Week US tap turnover, and finding it really different and interesting, so I was pretty excited when I spotted Feral's version in the fridge at my local Safeway bottlo. BUT...as I poured it and gave it a big whiff, it immediately smelled like a megaswill lager...maybe Corona? Not promising, but I recall they say the Sorachi Ace hop imparts a lemon flavour...so maybe I was flashbacking to all the times I drank Corona with a slick of lemon in it (don't shoot me...i'm sorry).
Then I drank it, and sure enough it tastes like...a megaswill lager. Bizarre...this could be a Carlton Draught in disguise? Maybe my tastebuds are off today...I'll have one of my homebrews next to see if that tastes off too. I'm such a massive Feral beer fan, but this is downright ordinary.

A six pack of Sierra Nevada Pale Ale.
The cheese and kisses showed what a good sort she is when she returned home from a quick trip to the supermarket with these little gems.
Happy days.
