Yep, alcohol has calories, no doubt. In fact, alcohol works out about 1.5 x sugar on a weight for weight basis (this isn't to say converting sugar to alcohol increases calories, btw).

For a low cal beer, you're going to have to leave stuff out - same approach as light beer. I haven't tried this, so ...

What would happen if you substituted molasses (or treacle - same thing, really) for the brown sugar? Might be simpler than hunting for a really unrefined sugar, go to the source, as it were.

I've got this one on my to do list as well.

Myself, I'd rather the decent beer every time. If it means I pay a bit more, or drink a bit less of it, then so be it.

I'm not sure what price I'd consider VB etc. worth. I wouldn't be buying it to drink it. Water the garden, maybe?

Only three brews so far, but as I have an irrestible urge to fiddle with things, it's been one kit&kilo (reduced volume), one kit and stuff including grain (IPA....very IPA) and one fired up stout that I'll bottle tomorrow.

I'm pretty happy with the results so far, considering nothing has had time ...
