Frozen Hops

Post by ozcah »

Hi,

I just found a sealed packet of frozen amarillo hops in my freezer. I've worked out they've been there since November 2007, so just a little over 16 months I guess.

Never opened, vaccum sealed.

Still usable?

How long do frozen hops last?

They'll work fine but would have lost some of their properties compared to recently frozen hops, ie, hops under 6 months old - ditch them if you pick up a cheesy smell in the hops or use them for belgians! And besides, who cares what their aroma properties are if you use them for bittering your beer! To compensate for age, I'd add at least 25% more hops at each addition.

Cheers,
TL
