IBU'S????

Post by Clean Brewer »

Hello all,

Would just like to ask about calculating IBU'S.

Just asking how you work out the IBU on your beer when say you use say Coopers Stout with 710 IBU, how do you translate that down to your beer once its made???

Cheers

As far as I know, the IBU quoted is for the quantity in the can, usually 1.7 litres.
If you use the can to make 23 litres of beer, the IBU of 710 will be diluted. The calculation is then quite simple:

710 x 1.7 : 23 = 52.5 IBU's.

Edit: I'll happily stand corrected, and accept the advice of earle in the post below.

Is the 710 per litre or for the 1.7kg tin? You have calculated it per litre?

It was always my understanding that the 710 IBUs was for the full contents of the tin.

710/desired batch volume = IBUs of finished product.
Prost and happy brewing!

i asked this question a while ago on this forum
http://www.homebrewandbeer.com/forum/vi ... &hilit=ibu

and was told for cooper's kits the calculation is

Kit IBU /final volume x 1.25 (don't know what the 1.25 is about though)

so the stout would be 710/23x1.25 = 38.6 IBU

This is different to the last two answers but the IBU's I've calculated using it seem to match a lot of the spreadsheets floating around on the net, so it seems to be fairly widely used.

So do you use the same formula for colour?
