Brewing and making other stuff
Brewing and making other stuff
I assume we all brew beer on this site, but what else do people on here make from scratch?
For me it is:
beer (obviously)
cider
lemonade
mead (occasionally)
spirits (occasionally)
wine (sometimes)
sake
vinegar
icecream
relishes/sauces/salsa etc
bread
pasta
and planning on trying cheese soon.
Anyone else got any?

Starting to get more into the "home made" stuff, for me (and the wife) its:
Beer (some good some not so good
)
Ginger Beer (from GB plants)
Cider (occasionally)
All Breads
All pastries, cakes etc (married a pastry chef
)
Will be trying out soon:
Sour Dough
Yoghurt
Ice Cream
And probably more when I discover methods/get time around 3 young terrors!

Yeah, also helps my wife is into all of that stuff too, especially the baking/pastry side, but then I do get "pointers" when I try and do it!timmy wrote:wambesi - Making sourdough is fun... I found a recipe in one of Jamie Oliver's books which works well.
Also have friends who have an organic bakery in country NSW who have a fantastic sour dough.
Its ironic how things work out, I never knew my father very well (divorced and passed away when I was younger) but apparently he was into the whole yeast farming thing and making yoghurt and now I'm into the whole HB thing starting to look into different yeast starters etc for storage and branching out.
Looking forward to it, when I get 5mins!

Too true man! Who wouldn't really? If I could drink enough beer I would spend all day every day making the stuff! I think I actually enjoy shopping and creating beer than drinking the stuff...but then again I am not drunk yet...give me another hour or so then ask memobydick wrote:I tinker. Is that a past time? I don't know - If I had a bigger shed I'd tinker even more.

Tinkering is not really about achieving an outcome. It's just about the act of tinkering. Maybe thats why home brewing is so appealing. There is always another way to tinker with a brew, tweak it, make it different. Having the beer is just a pleasant side effect of the tinkering? I don't know - just putting it out there.
