Not using kits ,but DME instead

Post by sidman »

I have seen this on this forum a few times ,people not using kits but 3 Kgs or so of DME instead how does this work ,is it any cheaper and whats involved ,you must have to boil hops and a bit of steeped grain i am guessing ,is the beer any better than using a kit and a kilo of DME,anybody got a recipe for a good pale ale using this method ,very interested.

Not any cheaper unless you buy in bulk. Dearer in fact

Hops is a must, your choice really of what hops to use.

I am looking at a LDM/Liquid extract mix myself.......I do not have the gear for AG

I did a Golden Ale recipe from Ash on this site. It was OK but lacked the mouthfeel or bitterness I was used to. Very Drinkable though IMO. :P . Very hoppy ......

I have been researching Gravity/Hops ratios and SG/OG to FG ratios too, to determine what is best.

A few links to assist that I found tonight on this site with links and Google

http://www.howtobrew.com/images/metricibu.pdf

http://www.howtobrew.com/section1/chapter5-5.html

http://www.brewsupplies.com/hops-gravity.htm

I have seen these many times and thought......Ah just chuck it in and see what happens  , but these give specific instructions

Cheers

A good German Pils:

3kg DME
250g Pilsner grain steeped 30mins at 75°C (add 100g crystal too if you like)

30g Hallertau 60min
15g Saaz 30mins
15g Saaz 5mins
(for whole wort boil)

1.5 - 2L starter of a good Liquid Lager yeast

Rack at 1018-1020
lager for as long as you can wait.

Thanks Rod, I have saved the doc. and will investigate a very large pot or maybe 2.......the largest I have seen is 19 Litres but it was cheap and nasty....

Any idea where to get the bag? I like that idea.

I taped a HB show on FOX on saturday with all grain, sparging etc, the bag looks easier.

Cheers

Shows Called : Special Brew last week he made a lager i think.

Its on lifestyle channel in 80% sure.

Buy the biggest pot you can afford. 100litres if you can, cause you'll just end up buying another if you move to AG.

Was 75C a typo? Did you mean 65C? Pilsner malt is a base malt and I'd be a bit worried about denaturing the alpha and beta amylase enzymes if you mashed it above 70C. 250g is a bit light on - with all that DME, you'd get a better outcome if you mashed at least 500g pils malt - the more the better...I guess it becomes a matter of having a big enough pot to mash and sparge the grains...
Cheers,

woopseedaisy.
what was I thinking?

Yeah, it was diffinately 65*C. (you dont even have be an AGer to know that 75*C is too high for pils malt)

Thanks for picking up my silliness TR.
Good work, as always.
