Hi all,
I've read about using oak chips etc to soak in a brew to simulate barrel aging, but what about using wood chips intended for smoking? The reason I ask is I've just found a back of mesquite and hickory chips from a BBQ pack I got once and naturally I thought of using them for brewing. Or would I be better off using them to smoke malt? btw - can you get the same smoked effect from smoking LDME and not the malt itself?
Cheers,
Tim

I was always under the impression this was used for spirits?

Yeah, I believe its used in spirits and also in winemaking, but then again, there's no reason why you couldn't experiment.

Im not sure about other woods - I cant see why not.
I reckon you should snap off a bit and chew it.
If you like the flavour, add it.
If not, smoke some malt with it....
Let us know how it goes. Its a good question.

Just a slight diversion there, if I may-when out camping, never EVER pick up a wattle tree twig from the ground to stir your billy . NEVER!!
