beer weekend

Post by Hatchet Juggla »

i'm planning a trip to my grandad's holliday house with a bunch of mates, and want to try a new beer. i'v had HEAPS of different beers already. I wanted some suggestions.

money is no object. i'm kind of looking for at least 4 different beers, and am willing to spend up to $200 on em. (if the beer is good enough, i'd be happy spending $50 per bottle. i'll be bringing my 1st two batches of homebrew as well as my entire bar full of spirits and liquor, i'm not running out of booze :) )

i'v tried all the premium beer at all the local bottle shops. for this i'll be going to acland cellars, http://www.aclandcellars.com.au. so theres very few limits on what i can get.

whats the best beer (comercial) you have ever tasted. if i havn't had it yet, it'l go on my shopping list.

My favourite beer isn't one I would drink loads of, it's Schofferhoffer Hefeweizen, a german (who'd have guessed) wheat ale. My favourite "heavy drinking" beers are Coopers SA & PA, James Squires India Pale Ale and Little Creatures Pale Ale. This probably doesn't help much but there it is.

Chimay blue is very nice for a dark belgian ale, cost is $20 for a 750ml bottle but if you havent had it before, be aware that its 9%

1. Little Creatures Pale Ale 50-60 a case
2. Coopers Sparkling 40-48 a case
3. Coopers Vintage any year....bit dear though, 75-85 a case 7.5% I think so not many required
4. James Squire (any type)

One to avoid Bitburger......I really did not like this beer

Erdinger the Wiessbeir, Dunkel and Dunkel Wiessenbock are all good. Give the Krystals a miss though.

Cheers,

FWIW, tried a stale William Worthington's White Shield a couple of years ago, & it was outstanding under the circumstances.

Bought 2 yesterday at First Choice Toowoomba, Best Before 20/06/07. Haven't tried yet, but expect it to be as good a Burton upon Trent IPA as you can get in this part of the world.

$7.50 a bottle, but as expense is no object, could be well worth investigating.

If it lives up to its label bla bla, you will be experiencing a REAL IPA! Sorry I haven't had time to review the ale for you. Am kicking myself. Repeatedly!! Much too late in the night to amend my tardiness.

Sincere regrets.

But, how long before you need to buy? If it helps, will try one tomorrow and let you know ASAP. Oh! The sacrifices one has to make!
Cheers,

i apreciate that sacrifice!

the date for the outing hasn't been decided yet. i'v got heaps of time.

i'v had chimay blue & white, i'v had all of those australian beers any of you have mentioned. james squire is my favourite beer, so i'v had all of 'em. (apart from the ones you need to go to the brewhouses for..)

Schofferhoffer Hefeweizen is the kind of beer i'm looking for. Erdinger looks verry interesting. i'm just crazy enough to try their non-alcoholic beer as well!!

i'v had bitburger, i didnt really mind it, but not one i'd get again. it was on special when i bought it.

i'm really looking for stuff that no ones even heard of, really different tasting beer.
stuff like delerium tremons..

I had completely forgotten that that was even there, let alone what it said!

scenario B is sort of a little rap group me and my mate started a few years ago. we basicaly get drunk, find 'instrumental' versions of rap songs (which generaly don't have instruments in them :S) and 'freestyle' over them (and make complete fools of our selves) into a cheap microphone.

its also what we call our group of friends.... and our web forum; scenario-b.no-ip.biz.

I also call my HB scenario Beer. so i'v got ym scenario pilsener, scenario wheat beer, scenario pale ale etc.

3 Monts. French and pure joy in a bottle.

Has a very distinctive buttery/honeycomb taste.

Around $13-$14 a longneck but worth it. 8.5%.

EDIT: $14 in Dan Murphys. You're looking at $17 in most places unfortunately.

Have you tried Southwark premium? it is nothing like the more well known "Green Death" it's poorer brother, I havn't had it for years, and don't even know if you can still get it, but it used to be a pretty tidy drop!

Southwark Premium isn't anything to write home about. Got it from Dan Murphys in Sydney over a year ago.

Tried one of my William Worthington's White Shield Burton IPA's tonight.

Outstanding from every aspect. One of the best beers I've ever had, and will be a benchmark for any IPA styles I brew in the future.

Chilled to approx 12deg C. Very clear amber ale with a creamy head. Beautiful malt taste with a touch of burnt caramel, and the head formed rings on the inside of the glass as the fluid level decreased.

Not as bitter as I expected, and from anecdotal evidence, not as bitter as the original IPA's. But a top drop nevertheless.

Well wortha preview for your weekend holiday house trip Hatchet Juggla.
Cheers,
