Bottle drying

Post by Ben »

Short of buying a bottle tree type device, can anyone suggest another method for easily drying a large number of washed bottles? I'm sure there is some simple genius type method that someone has developed.?

Thanks.

Yep, make a bottle tree type device :-) (some designs examples have been up on this forum recently)

Fairly simple idea but I just stack as many bottles as possible upside down in a device which looks remarkably like a milk crate, but for legal reasons isn't actually a milk crate

Hi Ben,
A while back I made a bottle draining rack
( http://gallery.oldholden.com/Homebrew-stuff ) from some offcut pine, drilled a few(,a lot of) holes through it with a hole saw & stuck on some legs.
It is very simple, cheap, works well & stores away easy. You can also carry all 30 empty bottles in one go.
I only use 30 longnecks (I can't be bothered cleaning/ bottling 60 stubbies) per brew but made the rack with 33 holes. That way it's easy to keep track of which bottle your upto when sterilising & rinsing (there is allways that gap)
I'm just in the process of varnishing it just to make it last longer & easier to keep cleen.

I can post the dimensions & hole sizes if anyone is interested.

Ben,
I bought a cheap 3 tier cloths drying rack from Reject Shop and then fitted wire mesh, that fits a bottle neck, on each level for strength. Found that this holds about 2 - 3 batches worth of bottles - 640 or 375 mls.
Great if you have the space!

Bit of a delayed reaction, but nice answer Flosso. :)

I don't bother drying them, just stack 'em in boxes, then rinse 'em with sodium metabisulphate right before I fill 'em. There's still a bit of water in them this time of year in sunny Melbourne, but never had a prob, no mould or anything. At the rate I drink them, they're not sitting around for a great deal of time anyways.

You all might be getting the idea I'm a very lazy b@stard, and you'd be right. Always pushing the boundaries of how much work I can avoid. I tell you what, I don't miss mucking around with that fricken bottle brush!!!!!

Pull out the bottom tray of your diswasher - it has lots of handy upright spikes and can hold about 20 bottles.

Glad you enjoyed it Evo,

Truth be told, I don't actually go out of my way to obtain these psuedo-milk crates. Normally people who know I use them for homebrew storage pass them on to me, or I'll stumble across them in my travels.

The last one I found was literally lying in the gutter between the train station and home. Too good an opportunity to refuse.

Bloody hell. Just bottling myself for the first time since the mid 80's. When I say "bottling myself"...

Let's just say I now know why I keg ;)

What I'd give for a milk crate (legit or not) and a Super Automatica.

So is she saying that you are dead ? That's horrible Grab. A horrible thing to say. Remember, he who dies with the most toys wins. Perhaps you need to remind the missus of that FACT.
