Malt Descriptions 101

Post by rotten »

G'day all.
Ever wondered what a malted grain could or should be used for? I certainly have, never realised there were so many differences and uses. BJCP gives beer styles and suggests I guess malts to use, but not how much or why. I searched the net and found this site called 'all about grains 101'. It's an american site which would cover enough for learners like myself.

Hope it helps someone
Cheers

The descriptions on the craftbrewer website are also quite helpful and list whether the grain can be steeped or needs to be mashed.

A very useful resource IMO and one i used a lot when getting to know grains.

A tip Rotten, any malt that starts with cara is a crystal malt and can be steeped.

And this one is my opinion and will be debated by others but carapils is chook food.

Crafetbrewer is good when purchasing, I guess I have needed resources when designing recipes especially when going for a style. Windows is good because I can have different pages, grain, hops, bjcp etc open, and recipe software to get it right. At least that's the theory for the future anyway.
