How do you pronounce Castlemaine for example? Cassel-maine or Car-sul-maine.

Moved my wife from NSW to Vic and she has all sorts of issues. She insists on telling people from St Arnaud that their town is Saint Arnoo. The locals call it Sen Arnidd. She can't figure out how to pronounce Ouyen either. O-yen or Wynn? Anyone?

When living In Dover Tasmania I always liked How tourists never could pronounce the D'Entrecasteaux Channel

they say the DEnter Cast oux Channel when it is actually the
Don Ca Castroo Channel.

IT'S the kind of news on brews that will have front-bar drinkers croaking a deep "I told you so" in pubs around the country: VB and Toohey's New have beaten a florid field of imported beers in a Choice magazine taste test.

Two testing panels - one of experts and another of lay drinkers - both rated our budget, blokey beers ahead of such big names as Carlsberg, Grolsch, Heineken, Tiger and Corona.

The experts, who were assembled for the onerous task of tasting and rating 47 beers - out of a staggering 700-plus available locally - had New and VB tied on a score of 15.5 out of 20.

Incredibly, that also put them both well ahead of VB's golden-boy stablemate, Crown Lager, which scored a paltry 14.

The top-rated lagers were Kokanee Glacier, from Canada, and Hahn Premium, which both scored 16.5.

The big advantage the locals had was freshness, with even the Beck's imported from Germany scoring less than the stuff bottled here under licence.

VB - Australia's biggest-selling beer - would certainly have an advantage there.

It's hard for beer to go stale when it's being sold at a rate of one case every single second of the day.

Choice spokesman Christopher Zinn said the tasting was done blind: the testers were given beers with no labels and asked to rate them purely on taste.

"New and VB hold their heads up well with the premium products, which is good news for the average drinker," he said.

"And the expert survey was backed up by the lay panel survey, which means that the experts weren't just in a bubble of their own."

Ryan Haynes, 23, of Gordon, has been a VB man for his entire drinking career.

"I guess I drink it out of habit. It's just what I've always drunk, but I do think Australian beers are the best in the world because drinking beer is part of our culture," he said.

"I'll occasionally have a bottle of something like Nastro Azzuro or Kronenbourg, but I always come back to the VB."

They clearly have their head up their ars*. I could drink all of those if thats all there was, except for Carlton Cold. It's just f**king disgusting. My father in law left some in my fridge 3 months ago. It'll still be there when he comes back. It's so hard to get down, like trying to swallow a sweaty sock, my throat just goes into spasms like I'm gonna hurl.

I had commercial beer last night, hangover 2day. They no longer sell James Squire at 16 footers

I had Carlton Draught, TED's, Heineken and a headache.

They did not even have a great selction of bottled beers

My Top 5 from a night on the town are as follows:

1) Little Creatures Pale Ale
2) James Squires Golden Ale
3) Mountain Goat Hightail Ale
4) James Squires India Pale Ale
5) Carlton Draught (because it's what I drink when none of the above are present, which is almost all of the time!) ON TAP ONLY!!!

It's getting into perfect weather now for a Grolsch, by the pool of course

Had our work xmas party last night.
Choice was the usual VB, New, Old and Hahn Light.
Sadly beggars can't be choosers, and I managed to leave before making a mess of myself.

Even the white wine was warm. NOT ON.
IMO warm white is something you drink when backpacking thru Europe

Yeah.. last night I went for Red wine - choices on the flight were VB or Crown. I have had a VB before when I really needed a beer, but what got my goat was the guy next to me who scoffed like I was some sort of heathen and felt so great getting a Crown.... I mean, fair chop - the marketing dept must have a smile on their face if they have engrained into people that Crown is actually a fine beer and worth of $7 a stubbie.

I agree Grolsh is nice. I wouldnt put Peroni or Asahi in my top 5 though... I just can't get into Peroni (I put it in the same bag as Crown) and Asahi isn't bad, but I still think it brings on hangovers worse than msot other beers... hence I stay away from it being a session beer.

Of course if the pub has some microbrew or an English or Irish import or a different James Squire drop, I'll usually go for it.

Good call with the Gage Roads - the pure malt lager is one of the best beers I've ever had.

Tooheys Old has got to be one of the all time classics and it's hard to believe it comes out of Tooheys, considering what else they make (i.e new, ted, pils (gah))
