I'm about 6'1 and 80kg. Just starting to develop a bit of a gut, but oh well. I'm starting to do a lot more exercise and such, so it should all be cool.

Geez i wish i hadn't started back on this thread.

6ft, was around 88kg 12 months ago and haven't drunk homebrew for a few months now but have been living on Coopers.
Haven't done much exercise for about 6 months i say and now pushing 96kg but still don't feel too bad about it.
Getting back into swimming and the gym so would like to keep around the low 90's and just tone it up.
Keeps me warm in winter too!! Haha

Keen as mustard, especially now the weather is cooling down. Just need to get a few more items before i start and ease back into it.
The 4 slabs a fortnight won't happen again though me-thinks. Take it nice and slowly and plan my brews more.

That happened to me too.
Muscle ways more than fat so you will lose weight.
Don't worry though, if you sit on the couch and drink beer long enough you will get back to your original weight.
You might not look as good in your trackys and white singlet though.

After I started brewing I stacked on a whole bunch of weight. After exercising more I'm back down to me pre-brew weight but still have a little bloody pot belly.

Anyone else?

Oh great! Just as I develop a taste for beer, I read this thread and see how everyone has put on weight since they started home brewing!! I struggle to stay around 52 kg, so I think I'll try to keep it down to one schooner a night (well, maybe a few more come Sat night) and see what happens.

BTW - has anyone ever done any research on beer guts? Why don't beer drinkers put weight on all over - how come it's only the gut? My BH is a BIG beer drinker and has always been a slender 72 kg but since I've been HBing he's starting to develop the dreaded BG. Maybe it's the lack of chemicals in the HB??

I've lost gut since doing HB. There has been research done...it has found that beer drinkers tend to get lazy with food when drinking. They will tend toward high carb. potato crisp, pizza etc....whatever is an easy type of eating. Hence the gut. I've just returned from a country that drinks beer as if their lives depended upon it...girls as well as boys...yet BG's are nowhere near as evident as here. Drink beer with and eat healthy seems to be the message.

Yes, yes, I've heard all the excuses about beer drinkers being lazy, eating more pizza, chips, etc, etc, and I must admit BH does reach for the chips when he settles into serious drinking at night, but it still seems strange to me that MALE guzzlers develop a big gut and don't seem to get fat on the rest of their bodies. You don't see any women around with beer guts - they just put it on all over. I've got a secret theory that it's something to do with all the gas in the beer not being able to escape quick enough! (Which means of course that women drinkers must get rid of the gas some other way.......) Anna

BTW - which country?

Saying that its the food people eat when drinking is a cop out and lacks any scientific evidence.

Ethanol contains ~28 joules per gram

Carbohydrates and protein ~16 joules per gram.

Fats contain ~36 joules per gram.

Stop fooling yourselves, if you consume more kilojoules per day than your body burns you put on weight.

As with all things in life its about balance. Regular exercise, a balanced food intake and moderate alcohol consumption.

Its not fecking rocket science.....

Cheers
DrSmurto

p.s. For those stuck in the dark ages (or the yanks) a joule is equal to ~0.25 calories so divide all the numbers above by 4.

p.p.s. Fact - ethanol is a poison, just like caffeine and nicotine. Making it legal doesn't change that.

p.p.p.s Yes, i did have too much to drink last night and am grumpy, consuming port in a small glass only works if you don't put the bottle next to said small glass...... coffee isn't helping...

Would it surprise anyone I'm double mrs warra's weight?

We have our 34th anniversary this Sunday. She's the same weight as she was 34 years ago. I'm a little better conditioned than I was then, but it's all food and beer muscle.

For anyone wanting to up the energy expenditure side of the equation, running burns approximately 100 Calories per Mile. In useful figures that is 260 Kj per Kilometre.

So last Sundays marathon was about 11,000Kj or ten mars bars. I used Coopers Pale to get my 11 thou back.

For more on energy expenditure I use this site

Cheers,
Greg.

Thanks, Anna.

We had a very nice lunch yesterday at Ca Marche (the restaurant at Cassegrain Winery). Food was excellent. I do love duck.

Not a good beer list there. All from the Aus mega brewers, and for the exotic part of the list they had, Cerveza, Pironi, Becks, and Heineken. They didn't even list our local boutique brewery The Little Brewing Co with their Wicked Elf range. Disappointing. Wines were good though.

183 cm and 90kg. I fluctuate between 88 and 92kg.

Up 5kg from my weight during footy season but since i retired 2 seasons ago the exercise has stopped completely......

According to the BMI calculator (which I disagree with on the basis its far too general and doesn't take into account body shape, muscle mass, bone structure etc) I need to lose 10kg.
