Interesting video.
I liked the ribbing between a few of them as to whether they're Homebrewers or Craftbrewers.
Noticed how in the US quite a few of the boutique/micro brewers seem to have started off as Home/Craft brewers.
Our local brewer, Warwick Little of The Little Brewing Company (who brew Wicked Elf), started off the same way.

Iv'e been brewing since the early 90's & I know it was a favoured pastime of my father in the early 70's.

I read an article,.......Maybe 20 yrs ago about how it started here, during one of the world wars (not sure which one) when most of the men where O/S there was a shortage of beer, so a number of Bakers "stepped up to the plate" (being yeast friendly & easy suppliers) & they started brewing from grain in thier bath tubs.
The story went on to say that it was a pretty ordinary result but it kick started the home brewing industry & concentrates became available in limited numbers.

Come to think of it......It could have been in Grant Sampson's book, "Understanding Beer Making"

The beers my father was brewing started as similar Concoctions as mentioned above but progressed to more "user friendly" purpose built ingredients as things got better, although I was too young to ever taste one.

My point is, that I would not be supprised if "home brewing" as we know it, actually gained it's initial strength right here!!

I had seen the original vid. This one is just as good.

I have a few Australian home brewing books that pre-date me. They still use imperial measurements. Early 70s. Came free when i scored a fermenter/bottles off ebay.

As for HB in Oz, Whitlam made it legal in 1972. Prior to that Mick, it was illegal.

Prior to 1972 it wasn't exactly illegal as such, but you had to be licenced and pay the appropriate excise. I think it was always legal to brew if you kept the alcohol to somewhere around 1% ABV.

My memory is that it was deregulated in 1973 by changing the excise taxation legislation. The papers had some articles about it at the time, and one of the Sunday papers had a recipe and instructions. I recall my flatmates and I brewing up a storm in a plastic garbage bin in the kitchen of our unit. Open fermentation with a teatowel across the top of the bin. We convinced ourselves it tasted like Tooheys Draught (now known as Tooheys New). I think we lost about 20% of our batches to bottle bombs.

As we all know, brewing at home has been going on for centuries.
