Coopers Heritage Lager Yeast.

Post by SUBREW »

Hi there, Great forum Guys sound like you might be able to answer my Question..

Am I right in saying that Coopers Heritage Lager is supplied with a blend of Ale and Lager yeast? A search of posts seems to confirm this?

Would be interested in finding out whats temps other folk have fermented this brew out at e.g. Ale 18-22 or Lager 8-12 or somewhere inbetween?

Will be using Kit + 1.5KG light Malt extract + 200g Dextrose... in the trusty old fermenting freezer that I can dial to the desired temp.

Have previously brewed this Kit at Ale temps with good results but if the kit yeast can take it I was thinking of moving to lager temperatures this time.

Any thoughts on this Kit yeast? I know I could go with SafLager but at NZD$4.90 I was trying to safe a few $$!

Cheers

It says here http://www.homebrewandbeer.com/forum/vi ... .php?t=571

That it is a combination of Lager and Ale yeast.
I haven't brewed this, but if you are going to use the yeats supplied, I'd brew at 18 - 22.

Yeah, Id worked through the "Sticky" post and saw that its a Blend of Ale and probably Saf S-189. Coppers website say try for 20 which is what I have kept it at for previous brews.

Was wondering if anyone else had tried going down, to say 12, which is the optimum quoted for Saf S-189.

I guess its a "suck it and see" and then a taste off to see which is prefered!

Cheers for the reply, Subrew

Subrew,
I have done this brew as per the Coopers recipe recommendations, 1.5kgs LME nothing more and fermented at lager temperatures.

I was very disappointed in the results, wasn't like a lager at all but a more like a sweet ale. It would benefit from the addition of hops in the boil and end for aroma, IMHO but I like them hoppy. It still got drunk though!

But to answer your question no problem with fermenting at lager temps, it would be a good idea to make a starter and build up the viable yeasties, especially if you are going to pitch cool.

Cheers

AC. Yep, I agree at Ale temps it was definately more Ale than Lager... but I liked it... will run it at 12 with the kit yeast and see if it ends up more like a lager! Will rack and cold condition for a week or 2 as well...

Extra Hops, yep!, I was thinking some Hallertau 'tea' for extra aroma...

Thanks for yor thoughts
