General homebrew discussion, tips and help on kit and malt extract brewing, and talk about equipment. Queries on sourcing supplies and equipment should go in The Store.
At the risk of being lynched by the all grainers: Can I ask for the formula/ratio of conferting all grain recipe amounts of malt to extract proportions?? I.E if the original full grain reciperequires 4 kg Pale malted grain how much Pale liquid or light dry extract would I need?
If the recipe stipulated 3kg of pale malted grain, how much pale malt extract would I need?
What you are asking is not capable of precise definition, because of the differences in extractable sugars available from different grains, and other variables such as mash temperature, efficiency of the mash etc etc.
I brew AG , and regularly get 90%+ efficiency into the kettle, but many other brewers are happy with 70 to 80% efficiency. There's a 10 to 20% differential right off.
However, as a very rough ballpark sort of guide, this is what I get from BeerSmith:
3 kg Pale Malt at 75% brewhouse efficiency for 23 litres gives an OG of 1.031
2 kg Light Dry Extract gives an OG 1.032
2.4 kg Light Liquid Extract gives an OG 1.031 (note this is in kg, not litres)
