Weird OG

Post by BrewHaus »

Hi all,

I put a porter in today...21 litres and it had a 1.7kg tin of Cascade Porter, 1.5kg liquid light malt, 1kg of DDM, 500gm Maltodextrin, 250ml Honey, 200gm Crystal and 200gm Choc malt...and it came out as 1.045!!

The brew calc said it should have clocked in at 1.088...this is very very low compared to what it should have been.

With that much fermentables it should have a really high OG...I think I may need a new hydrometer (which oddly I just bought brand brand new 1 week ago).

The really weird thing was a I made another brew today with 1.5kg Liquid light malt, 1kg of LDM and 200gm Maltodextrin with some grains and it was 1.055! I checked them 1 min appart.

Very weird.

Has anyone else found this with such a brew?

Cheers,

If I do a basement level K+K and flash it up with a real yeast and some finishing hops it's still going to come out at around $28
(Coopers Pale Ale tin ($12.50 at Coles), 1kg of BE1 ($6), 1pkt SafeAle $5, 25 gm Hops $5)

I added some honey from Aldi, some specialty grains (which are dirt cheap), a tin of malt and a Kilo of LDM to get a real monster of a dark ale.

Don't think I could buy 2 and a bit slabs of a really strong dark ale for $43.

I sure don't care if a great brew costs an extra $15 over a basement level beer and I enjoy 'Man Baking'

I also brewed a partial grain belgium today and it worked out around $37 all up with loads of ingredients ($9 more than the Coopers ale above). $37 for 2 slabs of passable belgium beer is dirt cheap as one slab of Leffe goes for over $100. While it'll be a pale imitation of Chimay Bleu (which is what I tried to head for)...at $8 per 330 ml stubbie...cue the ringing of cash registers...my beers worked out pretty cheap overall and save me money.

Hey Rob,

I checked it at about 24 degrees...I'm going to grab another hydrometer tomorrow (even though it's brand new) as both the Porter and the Belgium seemed to be way out.

It was strange that the Porter which should have had the higher OG weighed in lower than the belgium. If they'd both been out and the porter at least was higher it would make some sense.

Just thought that maybe the porter base didn't contribute as much to the OG but this shouldn't really be so...hopefully the gravity hasn't change too much and the new hydro gives me a bit better idea.

The real shame was that I bottled a beer the other night as the hydro said it was 1.010...which now I realise may have just created my first bottle bombs!!

Cheers,

Not a faulty Hydro
your "proper" gravity would be higher..
There are charts around on other brew forums that allow you to adjust for Temp variations.
Beersmith will do the conversion for you.
