aerating

Post by dregs »

How do you guys aerate your worts before fermenting? Iv'e been thinking of getting a little pump and stone http://www.craftbrewer.com.au/shop/details.asp?PID=692 from Ross. Is it worth it or is a good splashing of the cool wort while transferring just as good?

Cheers

nice one wrighty  my big spoon has a nice bend in it so it'll get a great big wobble up.

I read somewhere that a drop of olive oil in the wort can be a substitute for aeration but I've never tried it.

I use an airstone and pump, and it works just fine. I let it go for about 20 to 30 minutes, until the wort's all frothed up.

However, there are others who use one of those paint stirrers designed to be used on the end of a drill, and I believe it does just as good a job.

I guess it all comes down to whatever works for you.

I have in the past filled up the fermenter and then lifted that up to a bench and out an empty, sanitised fermenter underneath it.

Open the tap on the full one and let it drop ~1m into the 2nd one frothing away like crazy.

Altho now i just let the wort come out of the plate chiller and drop the height of the fermenter.

1 drop of olive oil is >1000 times too much. I read that article in BYO as well. You need a few uL.
