Yeast Question

G'day everyone.

I've always just used the kit yeast (only done 10 brews) and this time I'm wanting to try a different/better yeast. The question I have is... If the place I buy my ingrediants from isn't storing their yeast packs in a fridge, how much better quality are they goin to be then the kit yeast?

I'm asuming they're still goin to be better. But I've also read that yeast is better stored in a fridge. So will these packs of yeast still be better (then the kit yeast), but not quiet as good as if they had come out of a fridge?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Find an online home brew shop and get good quality products freighted to you.

Yeah, I'm starting to think that might be my best option.

I guess if ya want good brew, then using good quality products will go a long way to help achieve that.

I've read some good comments about Ross. Good place to start ya rekon?

He'll definately be getting most of my orders in future.

Ross at Craftbrewer gets all my online orders. I have bought yeasts, hops, complete kegging setup and all has been handled very well.

He is always happy to give advice over the phone too (even when I have problems at 7-8pm at night with my new keg setup).

I recommend Ross at Craftbrewer.

...time to find a homebrew shop and not a place that sells brewing stuff methinks...

All yeast should be refrigerated - dry or liquid. The only reason kits sit on shelves is in the hope that they move quickly enough off those shelves before the enclosed yeast expires...

It's hard enough brewing a decent beer without the $@*^&* running the shop making it virtually impossible to brew a reasonable beer beforehand because they know jack about storing the products they sell!!

I agree with you.

My local HB shop doesn't even have a fridge in it. Hence I buy almost nothing there, other than stuff like bottle tops and Irish Moss. Even my LDME for starters is bought with the groceries from the supermarket (it escapes the brewing budget that way).

I buy my stuff only from Ross by mail order.
Alternatively, I call in to Mark at Marks Home Brew in Islington during our trips from Port to Sydney or Newcastle.
Both carry the best quality ingredients, store them properly, they know what they're doing, and have excellent customer service.

I recall someone telling me that they visited a HBS in Sydney that had clear ziplock bags of hop pellets on display - on the front window ledge!
