White bits in Cascade Brew

Post by QldKev »

I've recently tried the cascade brew (Lager) and after 2 weeks its still not finished; but now there appears to be little white chunks floating around the top. It this stuffed, or should I ignore it.

g'day qldkev,

What Yeast did you use?

I recently had this happen to a brew and the only variable was that I pitched a different Yeast to what I normally used.

The batch turned out to be fine. So like keat said just see what it looks like when it's finished.
cheers

White stuff is generally yeast.

Did you take a gravity reading with your hydrometer when you started?

When you say it's still fermenting, why do you think that?

I havn't taken a gravity ready; it is still bubbling away. I used the standard yeast it comes with. I tasted it and could not swallow it, yuk; like a mild vinegar taste but not acid. Maybe I need to review my sterilising method; i've been using baby bottle wash. I might try the 4ml of bleach in the fermentor idea.

That's 4mL bleach / 1L of water, which is 1/2 cup (125ml) in 30L.

QLD Kev, I am a big advocate of the baby bottle wash Milton. I clean my dunny with bleach and would not drink from it no matter how much bleach I used. Milton however is used for babies bottles, and I see lots of babies getting about so it must do the job. I rinse after I use it however so get not bad flavours or smells. Never had an infection using it.
