Low OG

Post by Berger »

Hi, I have brewed a few stouts and both of them had an OG that was 7-10 points lower than expected, I used the calculator on http://www.brewcraft.com.au/wa.asp?idWe ... etails=172
The first one was:
Morgans Dockside
500g Morgans caramalt
250g Liquid Amber
500g Dried Light
500g Coopers BE2
250g treacle
50g roast barley
100g quick oats
10g goldings
Boiled oats for a few mins then strained into a pot with roast barley, setting of 1 on electric stovetop, never went to boil. 30mins with hops
Strained into fermenter
Boiled all sugars and malts excl. kit for 30 mins then disolved kit and into fermenter
OG was 1052, expected 1059
FG was 1020, expected 1016
Tastes good but alcohol content is 2% lower than expected

Second one was:
1 Muntons export stout
#74 stout converter
500g Liquid Dark
10mL liquerice extract
Followed instructions on #74 pack
18L
OG 1057, expected 1066
Not sure what is in #74 so I estimated 400g dextrose, 100g Corn Syrup, 400g malt, 50 roast barley (in a seperate little bag)

Anyone know if I am doing anything wrong or if I am just way off on my ingredients estimates?

relatively small differences like that could be from discrepencies between the figures used by the calculator and the product you used. i think i remember someone talking about this at some point.
