Out of date may be an underestimate
Its just a coopers original draught from years ago before I busted my fermentor & never renewed it until I could have a keg system.
Best before 28/09/2003
What can I do
1.Boil and treat like unhoped malt
2.Suck it and see
3.Bin it

No 2, just do not use the yeast that came with it.
Speaking of out of date tins. Big W has a Malt Shovel can that was not there yesterday, 1 only, "Managers Special" for $11 something. Expiry date of 3/07....great special not. I knew it was odd as they stopped selling Malt Shovel ages ago.
Is that legal? Surely not, misleading describing it as a "Special" I think it should state that it is out of date. They obviously found it out the back storeroom and thought bugger it, some sucket will buy it for nearly full price.
Cheers

A homebrew is like a fart, only the brewer thinks it's great.
Give me a flying headbutt.......
Just picked up a can of Coopers Wheat with a yeast B/B date of 2002!!!
Will be ditching the yeast and possibly using it for a base for a dunkel. Am I running the risk of the bittering stuff going off? I don't really care if it's off-colour for obvious reasons.
with something like out of date yeast, i read somewhere that if you use premium yeast then you can add the kit-yeast yeast to the boil, and since it kills that yeast, it just acts as food for the premium yeast... if this is the case, can you use out of date yeast in the boil and use it as food as you would for in-date kit-yeast, or will it produce off flavours?
i just scored a unused frementer and bottles and bits and peices and 2 cans of coopers larger went out of date in 2003 ,
any sugestions on what to do with it ???
You could use it for yeast starters if you want. But that's a lot of starters!
Or just chuck in a kilo of table sugar and give it to your megaswilling mates.

Thats the go!
The kit contents will be fine, but the yeast is way past usefulness.

I just scored 12 or so cans from an ex-brewer of out of date 2006/2007 Coopers, Cascade, a few Brigalow Ginger Beers and Cider, Blackrock Whispering Wheat, Cider as well. Can't remember them all. Am looking forward to throwing a few quaffers together with new yeasts.
Q. Is the yeast for the ciders the same as an ale yeast?
In battle when victorious, you deserve beer.
In defeat, you need it.

Possibly, possibly not. Ciders, meads and lemonades are more acidic that your average ale, which might cause some issues with your yeast. I'd probably go with the kit yeast even though it's slightly past its use-by date. Might be worth making a starter or proofing it tho.
I used an out of date can of Blackrock cider with a can of coopers blonde as an experiment, both yeasts were tossed in. The end result was about 9.5% but is quite drinkable. I reckon you could use ale yeast with cider only but would expect some different flavours. The bloke at the HBS offered to sell me in date cider yeast so you could properly pick some up.
Just cracked open the can of Coopers Wheat (BB 2002...). Jeez it was dark!!! I'm making a hefeweizen (partial) and I think I was a bit heavy handed on the choc malts so this will be a dark one indeed..... Will post back tasting notes
I had an out of date can of muntons continetal pilsner... it was supposed to be straw colour.. I have to tell everyone who drinks it that its a dunkel... tastes alright though... just not what i expected.
I freely admit that I was Very Very Drunk....
