Put this on a few weeks ago, just for something different. It's not finished yet, in part due to the cold snap which seems to render my submersible heater useless. However, the recipie...

Maltshovel Oatmeal Stout
500g LDME
500g Milo
1kg Dextrose
35g Fuggles Pellets 30 mins
10g Fuggles Pellets 5 mins

No idea how this is going to turn out, Milo and that amount of fuggles being the unknown factors for me. Just curious if anyone else has tried milo in brews? I know there was a thread a while back about it, just thought I'd bring it back into the limelight.

I'm interested to hear how this turns out. I don't drink Milo myself but this guy at my work does and at around 10 am every morning he walks past my office with his milo and I swear I can smell a wort being created. Makes me want to drink beer. :lol:

I've heard a few people voice their concerns over the amount of milk powder in Milo.

Keep us posted with the progress.

I'd be interested to hear too. What does the milo contain aside from sucrose, cocoa (if you're lucky) and milk powder?

funny to see this up here i was thinking about a milo beer as well recently, looking forward to seeing how it goes

On that same note, anyone tried chocolate topping in their stouts/dark beers - as in icecream topping. Sorry corks didnt want to hijack your thread

Corks! Go for it...a faint heart never won a fat turkey! My only concern is the sheer quantity of milo in the brew - if the milk based products don't kill the head of the beer, there may be a bit of sour lactic tang from them.

man bleach fumes can give a man a headache.
just bottling this one now, left it in the fermenter a bit longer than usual. it does have a bit of a latic tang to it, but its alright straight out of the fermenter. we'll see what happens as it ages. i think i might have to lock this one away for half a year for it to get good.

havent tasted it yet, i might crack one tonight, once i get two bloody essays written. and its a bloody good day too. bloody university.

finally tried it, and it is a dam fine ale, a dam fine one indeed. the lactic tang complements the fuggles wonderfully. so dam smooooooth. next time i might replace the dextrose with something a tad less fermentable me thinks, it dam near put me to bed. I had to tip half a longy out, else i would not be doing any study tonight.

but all in all definitely something i'd do again. only about four weeks in the bottle too, imagine it after eight.

Does the Milo bring much of a chocolate sort of flavour to the stout?

very slight, oh so very slight. it got a bit lost amongst all the malt and hop and what-have-you. but it is there. adds to the complexity very nicely.

time to revisit this idea i think. or rather, take it to a new level. there's one bottle of the milo stout left, so i'll try that sometime soon, but here's the new plan. :twisted:

Milo Stout Mk II
2 x Cooper's Stout Kit
1kg Dark Malt
500g Black Patent Malt, steeped
450g Milo (size of mid-sized can)
20g Fuggles for 20 mins
5g Fuggles for 5 mins
Safale S-04

I realise i may be trying to have my cake and eat it with this one. We only live once I guess. I am a tad concerned about the yeast though, would a yeast with a higher alcohol tolerance be better perhaps?

Wow... now that's a stout! :shock:

Having said that, I don't think S-04 will have too much difficulty eating its way through all that. If you're concerned, making a starter would probably help get the yeast off to a flying start. I've done twocans (with extra fermentables) and even the basic kit yeast handled it fine.

Yeah, let us know, corks. How did the one from July last year turn out?

I had been wondering about using Milo in beer. Then I turned vegan, so I guess I'll never be trying this myself.
