To be honest, most of the imports they mention are pretty much the European equivalents of our cheap, nasty beers.

The problem is the average beer taster/aussie bloke in AU wouldn't know a good drop if it slapped him in the face

Do the same test in any other country and I guarantee different results. It all comes down to what they are used to, not what they actually think is better.

Thats my 2 cents anyway.

They might as well get McDonalds cheese burgers from all over the planet and then try to rate them in order of taste. Who cares if Australia wins, they are all cra*py cheese burgers.

I notice that Aussie Becks rated higher than imported Becks. I used to quite like Becks until they started making it here. Now I reakon it tastes more like Tooheys New. I think the tasters were comparing how other beers stack up to what they usually drink, so no wonder they rated VB & Tooheys tops.

As an aside I used to have a mate who was a chemist at CUB. He told me that Fosters as Crown are the same beer. Only difference is when they made a good tasting batch of Fosters they bottled it as Crown

Yes I am, home to some of the worst "beer" on the planet

But also home to alot of very nice microbrews and German pubs with fair dinkem imports

Yuppies drink Crown lager because they don't know any better.

Bogan's drink VB because they don't know any better.

The rest of us brew our own and make what we want, including Crown lager and VB.

ryan, you can't seriously tell me you think VB or Tooheys are better than say a Hoffbrau or a LCPA or anything else for that matter??

I'd rate Tooheys over VB in a 1 on 1 but they are not in my top 20........

I think if you had a blind tasting with people on this site, you would soon realise that it is all based on individuals tastes.

I can pick a Tooheys a mile off, and a VB....mates tried to trick me into a VB one night

one sip, gave it to my mate.

I tricked my brother and mate into drinking my CSA recipe, original bottle and they did not see the cap, they loved it

My mate that I have converted away from Tooheys and VB was swearing when I showed him the paper, and he's a Christian

I will be honest here...

On the VERY long flight from Chicago to Brisbane I had the only beer the flight was offering "Tooheys New" and couldn't get past the second sip. It was the most vial tasing beverage I think I have ever had. Never tried it again since.

VB has something in it that makes my stomach turn. Tastes decent enough but even 1 makes my stomach do flips!

There are however quite a few aussie beers I like. The Coopers range are all quite good (spent 2 years in SA) and I like West End Draught, Tooheys Old, and Carlton Black as well. But I think that comes down to what is available and what you should/can drink with mates/at pubs etc.

When it comes right down to it, it is personal preference. They should have done the same test on wine judges who have developed pallets. That I would have been interested in. Not that I would take their advice, would just be funny to see them find "complex fruity mouthfeel" in a VB

It costs 10 bucks to look at the results though. But even reading that page about their testing makes me sick to the stomach. They clearly don't know what they are talking about.

To call a beer premium, definitely does not require it to be exotic. I'd rather shoot myself than call crown lager exotic. They don't even realise that a pilsner is a form of lager...

It all depends on what the tasters are used to drinking. If most of 'em have been used to Aussie megaswillers of course they're gonna say that these types of beers taste the best to 'em. The tasters are just very used to these Aussie adjunct lagers with POR and aren't used to the all malt and noble hop character of the German and Dutch lagers.

But what do you expect? With the exception of people who make their own, beer is a mass produced product made for the uninformed peasants who swill and have no real interest in what's in it or how it's made. The mindless VB and Toohey's drones just want it served cold while they talk about V8s and glare at some pole dancer's/skimpy's fake tits. Drink up idiots your beer is getting warm.

It`s a shame no one`s mentioned the Flagship of Qld. beer- Fourex Gold. Better than VB even, and right up there with the pricey imports. I buy it as a special treat to reward myself, but it`s so popular they will price themselves out of the "excellent beer at a sensible price" market if they`re not careful.
And that`s the thing- they know we love it and will keep paying big money to drink it. Bit unfair, really.

This was also on the TV this morning and
They rated Blue Tongue Pilsner the best in its class, the Premium beers rated Hanh premium and Some Canadian Glacier Lager as the best lager (the name is in the link) however the best ales were LCBA and James Squire Golden Ale.

What they said about VB and New was that whilst they wern't the best in their class they weren't the worst, So Crown ain't worth the money (but most people know that already).

The judges may be biased but I don't think so, as they were blind tasting and didn't know which beer they were tasting; however if you are brought up on VB or New then you would obviously rate them higher.

At least they did pick a couple of great ales as best in the class.
