Yeast Culture Equipment

Post by Kevnlis »

I am after cappable test tubes and beakers and other things required to culture and store yeast samples. I am happy to order them but prefer to find them in Aus (int shipping is too much of a hassel).

Cheers and happy brewing!

i'm a microbiologist by trade, so i have tried to dabble in yeast farming...

I use 3x 500ml glass jars to collect the yeast in and transfer (pasta sauce jars), just make sure they're very clean and sterile... you dont want your yeast smelling like garlic or pickled gerkins or something..

Once collected and the settling and everything has been done a few times, I put them in 50ml cetrifuge tubes that i get from work, i usually collect 4 tubes worth everytime i farm the yeast.

They are long and narrow, and come already sterile, and you can buy foam racks for them so you can keep a heap in the fridge without taking up too much space. they have a cone shaped base so it collects the yeast quite nicely.

I know sarstedt sell them, and crown scientific (google the website)... they are both based in australia. They are quite expensive due to the fact that anything used for medical purposes has the price bumped up.

they are 119 bucks for 300 tubes.... but that'll last you forever... maybe you could go halves with someone...

give me a bell if you need anymore help with it...

MY50G or MEA. I have used CY20S, but prefer the ME agars generally.

I thought it would be easier leaving them as liquid cultures, rather than plate them out on agar... I tend to get the occasional contamination when i plate my cultures out, but maybe they store better in aerobic conditions.

whatever works works...

One thing I prefer is the ability to guarantee a pure culture. That works for me, and as you said, what works, works.

I planned to use this method:

Chris, does proscitech sell to the public? Also are the prices on the website correct? Seems way too cheap and they seem to be selling things the public should not have access to IMHO.

Cheers everyone!

I don't really know- never been an issue for me as I set up an account whilst working in MB lab. You are best off emailing them directly.

Just recieved a reply from them and they do not discriminate in who they sell to. Prices on the website are ex-GST and postage is a flat rate of $12 unless you order more than $200 worth of merchandise.

Cheers

Ha funny thing I was looking for stuff yesterday and came across this web site - http://www.labquipsales.com.au/

I'm after some 1ltr and 2ltr conical flasks for starters. I'll probably grab some other gear too.

I didn't think there would be an issue. Good luck with the culture.

Oh 1 thing I forgot to add, Grape and Grain also carry 1ltr and 2ltr conical flasks at a very reasonable price.

My 2 cents worth, I bought a 2 litre erlenmeyer flask from Livingstone International last week for $16.06 inc. the web site is http://www.livingstone.com.au. Delivered in two working days, also got the stir bars from there. Thanks Ross for the tip.
