getting wood

Post by adebrew »

Hi
If I was to add wood chips (oak etc) to wort would boiling them first sanitise them enough? And would it be best to strain them out b4 adding to fermenter? And would they be ok to use again? anyone tried this??

hello, ive used oak chip twice, not a huge fan, i put them in a stocking, added one lot in primary and in the secondary for my second attempt, both were porters, i have never tried it with a pale or lager. imo it makes the beer dry something i wasnt after in a porter. but it is a nice flavour. just not a quaffer more a sit by the fire with a longie of it and chat type of beer, if i did it in future i would use more hops and make it an all malt. as it wasnt a subtle effect. good luck!, heathen

If you are looking for an introduction an option is the TCB Oak Ale wetpack. See the thread here.
