budget brew recipe challenge

Post by rahne »

i read on another site that home brand brew kits turn out quite nice even better than more expensive kits so challenge is the cheapest brew and then when they are ready tell us how you did

i did
Farmland Draught $8.99
cooper brew enhancer 1 $5.12 plus another half a packet going to waste
coopers caps $2.24
total $16.35

so it's beatable but can you find products and how daring are you to take the most cheapest option (white sugar)

Farmland Draught $7.50
1 KG Homemade specialty sugar (See Toffee) $1.00
Amarillo 20g at rack $2.00 (Edit Dry hop)
EDIT Caps 30 x 2 cents each...60 cents
EDIT MKII 180g Dex 40cents (Blows the budget  )

$11.50 excluding cost of Candy thermometer about $6-7 and of course power (Stove for 1hr + on low) and water.

Quaffable

Cheers

A homebrew is like a fart, only the brewer thinks it's great.

Cheapest brew from me would be 2 cans of Woolies home brand (1x Lager & 1x Draught). cost $7.49 each on special primed with some raw sugar from the kitchen (again home brand) so lets say 50c worth and capped the bottles with Home brand caps, so for sake of argument lets say 50c again. So the total would be $15.98

Cheapest brew for me was when my wife, then girlfriend, worked at the Qld distributor for Coopers. Beer made from freshly dented tins for the price of sugar and caps. Though I am now wiser and wouldn't use sugar, it sure was cheap beer.

Where are you buying Farmland kits for $8.99? I think your local Coles is ripping you off.

My local one has them at $7.50 and always has Tooheys kits on sale for $8.50. The Tooheys dark ale is bloody good drop for that price and I did a Tooheys Draught not long ago with a BE2 and 200g Yellowbox honey that came out very nicely. All up cost me less than $15 although I am kegging so I don't have to pay for caps and drops, etc.

Yeah definitely worth chosing the Tooheys over the farmland... usually only 30c difference at our Coles.
recently did a toucan cos it was only a couple of bucks difference between BE2 and a Coopers Lager.

I think my cheapest has been around the $13 mark... a Coopers can on special and a BE1. Good value beer.

i live 2 hours south of perth the other home brew suplier is a business that sells the stuff on the side every things cheep except the kit to coles stays just below there price even the brew enhancers come up in price over the past 6 months about $1.50

but THE IDEA WAS TO GO BUGGET CHEAPEST kit, brewing sugar and what ever else. You could find in your area and then see how it turned out. like i said some people tried the farmland brand and were suprised that it came out nicer than other kits

Maybe making some invert sugar (home made candi) would be the way to go.

Boonie, 2kg raw sugar works well for me, as long as it's balanced out with more ginger- sometimes even a few noble hop pellets...

timmy, yeah, I forgot to add the yeast to the price. I used the good old lalvin EC-whatever it is.

I've posted the recipe before. Will go looking.

The only thing not there, is that I finely chopped all lemons, and heated with some water for 20-odd minutes at 65*C. Then I got going with the potato masher to break them up.

And yes, it was the EC-1118.
