How can I make a decent beer with no equipment???
Hi,
My husband and I are living in a country that does not tolerate alcohol - it's illegal. My husband has made a batch which gives a bit of a kick but is really flat and tasteless. Because of where we live, we don't have access to any beer brewing kits. We have non alcoholic beer which my husband used last time, plus sugar and yeast. I even have some hops coming over that i packed with my household goods from the previous country we were living in but that will take a while to get here.
I would be so grateful if someone could give me a rudimentary recipe, keeping in mind we have none of the sophisticated ingredients or equipment that is usually used.
Cheers,
Oz

If you can get hold of any fermentables then you are in business..
Eg: honey
Malt
Sugar
Dextrose
etc etc
Add some hops to taste and some yeast and voila beer..
Depending on the ingredients that you can get hold of then this may depend on the quality of your beer but where there is a will there is a way..
Can you get hold of some dried malt??

malt
THANKS lethaldog. Actually I also packed away some good malt from a beer brewing place in Switzerland (where we lived before moving from Australia) so that's on it's way too! I'll check out and see if they have anything here too.
By the way, apart from ingredients, do you recommend a certain way of making the beer yourself?
Cheers

Well for example:
you could use say 2.5kg of ldme, boiled for 60 mins with hop additions of say for example you were making an apa.
try the malt
25gm NB at 60 mins
25gm cascade at 30 mins
25gm cascade at 15 mins
15gm cascade at 5 mins
make up to 22 litres
use a us-56 or simillar and ferment for a week or so then rack or bottle and that should be a very nice beer..
all depends on what sort of beer you want to make but thats just one example.

Could I ask what country you are living in?
And if you cannot obtain these the items above for any reason, I would advise looking into Mead. I've been keen to try my hand at one, seeing that its made from mostly honey. May take a bit longer to brew, but from what I've been reading it's the wine of the gods!
Good Brews,
b

You had me at dry hopping.

What you could try is the following, with ingredients you should be able to get in any country. Mind you it won't be good beer, but any beer is better than no beer.
Try 2 kilo of biscuit makers malt.
Dissolve this in about 3 litres of good old water.
Add 500gm of decent honey uintil dissolved
Add hops, any hops but preferably Hallertau, Saaz or Tettnanger. Mind you Cacsade, fuggles, goldings, amarillo will do in the following:
20gm for 60 min
20gm at 45 min
15gm at 30 min
15gm at flame out
Make up to 20 to 22 litres and add yeast. Preferably a decent brewing yeast, but if not then any port in the storm.
It'll be beer Jim, but noty as we know it.........GOD I love Star Trek.

The liver is Evil and must be punished!!
Oh, just don't do it. If you really need a drink that badly, either move or go on holiday.
From what I understand about most of the countries where alcohol is illegal, it really is just best to avoid it altogether. They are usually pretty hard line and I doubt the memory of a beer that you've brewed in the sink using sugar cubes and lawn seed is going to add much light to the nights you might end up spending in a Saudi gaol.
Beer is good, but not that good.
I'd also caution others to maybe think twice before promoting or assisting an illegal activity on a public forum.
Most places have some sort of local, legal drug - in Oz it's alcohol. Find out what your's is and take that instead.
Good luck.

Beers are friends, not food.
Get yourself a good lawyer Wassa, or you'll be doing some time - Saudi-styleLink wrote:I'd also caution others to maybe think twice before promoting or assisting an illegal activity on a public forum.

What'll probably happen is the Saudi Government will apply to have you extradited, which the Australian Government will allow of course.
You'll be flown over there, handcuffed to two burly Federal Police officers who will hand you over to their Saudi counterparts.
You'll be given a preliminary flogging, before standing trial where you'll be convicted (and rightly so because you're guilty as sin). You'll then be flogged again and then sent to a maximum security jail where you'll spend the next 20 years shifting sand from pile to pile.
Good luck man.
And let Wassa's sad story serve as a warning to others about the dangers of biscuit makers' malt.
