Since having made my own beer i think i now know why people comment so much on the taste of good old V.B. Was and shall remain my preference when buying beer but am starting to wonder wether my choice is solely because of the state i'm in. (excuse the pun)
VB is generally not held with high regard in the beer enthusiast / brewing fraternity for a whole swag of reasons, not least of all the taste but also the ownership, the mass-production, the high amount of processing etc. etc.
In SA we are lucky in that barely anyone buys VB, because it is so terrible and CPA isn't that much more for a case. Then again alot of people drink West End Draught. Go figure.
My opinion of VB is, and will always remain, one of the worst commercial beers in Australia, and one that has unfortunately gained a reputation much like Fosters internationally as a hallmark beer of Australia. I'm ashamed as an Aussie but it is true.
If I'm out, VB is never an option for me, because even if there is only cheap commercial beer on tap, I'd take a Southwark or a Tooheys or something, and that's only in dire situations!!

Coopers.
You do know VB is seen as horse piss on here don't you?
Yes, generally people only drink what everyone else drinks regardless of whether it's actually any good or not - arrange a blind tasting night with VB, XXXX, New & any other common swill, then see if you actually can pick them apart - you may be shocked.

Starting to taste the diff. My bro-in law is from S.A. and i'd never had a beer with him till last week when he tried my first which strangely enough was alright even though i thought i'd stuffed it.
His first words when he picked the glass up were, "it's good to not be able to see through my beer", and he finished his before i did!!

I will drink VB when it is offered to me but I don't buy it.
I spend the money I save brewing HB on other beers for when I'm going out.
The thing with VB is that if you drink it all the time you don't seem to notice the taste, but if you drink CSA or other nice beer and then drink VB it's horrible.
I'm not bagging it though because sometimes I've ran into mates and had a ball drinking the "Green death"

Green death!! I like that, out of 120 at work i reckon 90 of them would choose the, "Green Death" over most others. It's true, you tend to drink what others around you drink.Wassa wrote:It is passable, on a hot day, where there is no other beer available, no water available and nothing else available to drink.
It is basically GREEN DEATH!!!!
Hi Rysa, you will have plenty of choices of good beer around Broadbeach. It's a trendy part of the Gold Coast, with quite a few good class watering holes.
There is a Dan Murphys just around the back of Pacific Fair where you should be able to pick up just about any beer style that you can access in Vic. If you are holidaying you'll probably find youself sampling packaged brews that you wouldn't get to at any other time of the year.
Whatever, steer clear of the dreaded "Yellow Death". It is engaged in a life or death struggle with the equally dreaded "Green Death"!

We have a Dans down here that is good and an Irish Murphys pub which has on top of their building, " Drinking Consultants" Not sure if this is a standard for them but i like it. Might have to smuggle up a few of my own brews!?! Nah will just sample some new beers i think. Last time i was there i had a rather large glass of Premium Blonde at the casino which wasn't too bad. It did taste a little better than V.B.!!!!!!!! Well maybe alot better?! Keen to sample a huge seafood platter, missed out last time but am gunna make sure i get the lot this time round.
ROFL. agreed. one point though, if hell froze over, you could melt the ice and drink it... and hellish ice-water would be more agreeablebuscador wrote:I would only drink VB if:

I will never go back down that dirty path.
Thank you soapy dishwater for giving something other than VB.

There's normally some OK bottled beer at the pubs there or you could go to one of the 2,000,454,321.67 Irish pubs in Surfers and drink Guinness, given the general absence of anything else decent on tap. ..up there it seems you're trendy for buying a paley...Rysa wrote:I'm comin up that way in a cupla weeks, stayin at broadbeach!!! What beers should i sample? Last time got stuck in Howl at the Moon!!
