The ban on smoking in the pubs and clubs of Victoria

Post by rwh »

Hey, was just reading another thread, and thought I'd do a bit of a poll on what people think of the Victoran Government banning smoking in pubs and clubs? I personally LOVE the idea (being a rather militant non-smoker).

There are lots of interesting stories from places that have done it before now (like in Ireland where 10% of smokers quit after they introduced a ban... not surprising given how important pubs are to the Irish social life, and how cold it is outside ).

I am just looking forward to being able to go have a night out, do a bit of dancing or whatever, and not coming home smelling like the inside of some kind of chimney. And I reckon we all might live a bit longer too. It gives me a bit more of an excuse to damage my health with something we all love... BEER! :)

I heard that there's a lot more open-air establishments opening up in Melbourne in reaction to the legislation, and that tobacco companies are subsidising pubs' installation of open-air areas to cater for smokers. There's meant to be some kind of massive open-air nightclub opening on the roof of a building somewhere too, though I've forgotten all the details. Interesting how the money gets moved around.

This legislation was slated to come in earlier, but was delayed because it was believed that it would negatively affect the tourism associated with the Commonwealth games. Sounds like a bullshit excuse to me, but at least it's finally coming in. By the way, does anyone know exactly when it does kick in?

OK, I'll shut up now ;)

Yep, definately a good idea :D :D :D

I've got a friend doing a viticulture course, and he was told at the start that smokers had no chance of succeding in winmaking/brewing commercially because of what it does to your tastebuds (I guess the exeption is if you're making Budwiser)

Lethal, thats what I thought, for 18 yrs. I always thought that people were crapping on about more taste and smell if I stopped smoking. 18 months ago, 4 days before my first son was born I had my last nicotine fix. My sense of smell and taste have improved heaps.

I'll be one of the lucky duckies that will be enforcing the ban after 1/7/07.
Life's not all beer and skittles. Just beer.

they've had it in QLD for a year or 2 now, and it's great
nothing worse than waking up with double the hangover, no sense of smell and sore eyeballs from cigarette smoke
