Priming in Primary Fermenter?

Post by ahsaul »

Hi Chaps,

Maybe stupid question, but I've been pondering it this afternoon...
In theory, could you add your priming mix (dextrose disolved in water) into the primary fermenter, mix carefully and then bottle directly?

I've read mixed reviews - some say this stirs up the gunk at the bottom too much, others say that with careful stirring it makes no difference...

Thoughts on this?

Cheers!

I think it would leave a lot of sediment in your finished product

surely the cost of a sutaible bucket with a tap would make it no worth the hassle of trying to not disturb the trub?

Depends what type of yeast you're using I guess. I've seen some trub that just won't move when disturbed while others....

I'd be just buying another tub/bucket.

Buy another fermenter, perfect excuse to brew more, i run five now and always leave one empty for racking and priming etc, when i only had two i would brew a batch, rack it and whack another batch straight in, by the time that one was ready to rack i was bottling the other one ( when i used to prime each bottle) and just kept recirculating, then i got onto bulk priming and bought another and so on...

Completely agree with all your comments.... Just fork out the few bucks for a priming bucket and would save potential dramas...

Just an aside - I'm over in the USA and have found homebrewing to be really relatively inexpensive.... Even just looking at a half decent priming bucket with spigot, set me back only $10...

And I've seen that Liquid Yeast (like Wyeast or White Labs) is about $15 in Australia! Sets me back about $4.95 here.....

Thanks for you thoughts chaps!

Your lucky your over there, as far as i know the liquids all come from the US and unfortunately we have to foot the bill for shipping which the stores over here would have to add in to their costs, i get my wyeast for $11 but in my local HBS they are about $18
