Buy or make a fermenter?

Post by Timmsy »

I am think at getting a couple new fermenters so i can do 2 brews at once. I have 3 well 2 because i lent a mate one to get him into it. He done one and then used the bucket to put coolant into it :x Im sure its stuffed now even how much cleaning i do. What the coolant eat into the plastic??

Would it be stuffed??

Anyways i can get one with the turn lids from my HBS for $35 30l ones and come with a brew and a couple extra things. Also i read somewhere that you can make your own from Bunnings?? All i have to do i drill a hole in the lid for an air lock and put a tap in. How much roughly would that cost as im weighing up my options at the moment. The ones from the HBS come with your air lock etc...... So any ideas??

Well, I'd suggest that if your mate is really a mate he'd replace the fermenter that he farked up by putting figgin coolant in it! Jeeze!

Yeah, your mate should replace it since he stuffed it.

But as far as making one goes, I made two for racking into/bulk priming from bunnings. The only issue apart from having to drill a couple of holes is having to clean up some of the flash on the inside. The ones I've bought from HBS don't have any rough bits inside.
It doesn't matter so much for me though because they're not being used for primary, they don't get a bad scum ring from the krausen.
And they are only 25L instead of 30L

If I was setting up again though, I'd seriously consider bucket (pail) type fermenters. Easier to clean out I'd reckon.

I'll second that. ( the bunnings comment, that is )

I got a fermenter from bunnings that is 25L, came with a screw on lid and also had a tap.

$15.

Bloody bargain.

I am just pissed that they only had one left, and they havent re-stocked that particular item for over 2 months now........i check at least once a week.

Great if you can find 'em.

If you are going to spend money on a fermenter get a pail style one from a HBS it will cost $35-40 and is well worth the money.

I was going to get one of the screw top containers from Bunnings but the scrooge in me said go for the pail, so I did. I drilled a hole in the lid for the grommet and air lock and a hole in the side for a lever tap, which I got from HBS. Works a treat for a racking container and have one in there at the moment. Total cost is less than $20. As for preference of one over the other, I don't have one as they are both effective but the pail doesn't have the see through lid.

A Bunnings water container is my bulk priming vessel. With tap cost less than $20. All you would have to do for fermenting in it, is to drill a little hole for the airlock in the lid. Almost exactly the same as a HBS fermenter, but roughly half price.

My main fermenter is a pail(bucket) style one. MUCH easier to clean due to straight sides, and I reckon has less nooks and crannies for infections to possibly get a hold.
