Using processed sugar cubes to prime tallies

Post by chum »

Has anyone used those processed white sugar cubes you can buy in supermarkets to prime beer with? The weight comes in at about 4-5 grams depending on brand. Seems like a cheaper alternative to carbonation drops.

i never liked the carb drops and can't say as i used the cubes, just a suggestion, have you thought of bulk priming ?

consistent carbonation in any size bottle once you prime and easier to carb up to your preferred style of beer.

cheers

I've thought of bulk priming, but then I've shot myself in the foot by using my second fermeter to brew another beer. I really dont have anymore room for another fermeter in the house.

well at least you're putting it to good use 8)

all i can say from experience is that the measuring scoops you can get from any HBS are an easy and reliable way to go, all i ever used before i got my keg was the scoops and white sugar, sometimes brown sugar in a darker ale or similar.

i tried priming a few bottles of wheat beer with honey once, bloody disaster, underprimed to the sh!thouse

cheers

Only a couple of potential probs maybe. How sanitary might the cubes be, and do they actually fit through the neck? Before I got a dedicated bottling bucket and both fermenters were in use, I sometimes have boiled and cooled a sugar/water mix and then used a syringe to get it in the bottle. Works a treat and is accurate (better than carbonation drops). Syringes are cheap from the chemist, but they'll probably think you've a drug habit if you go to purchase
