I realised I mixed up the labelling of three bitters I did at the same time
(3 different fermenters).
In two of them I had a CAFFREYS clone ( Muntons Yorkshire Bitter Brewblend #70
500g lme
Muntons Prem Gold yeast)
In the other I had a Cooper's Bitter and 1kg of Dextrose (kit yeast)
They have been down for about 7 weeks, so I thought I would do a taste test compare and work out which one was which.
Should be easy you think? The two Caffreys had malt and hops in the fermentables, while the Coopers just had dex.
I poured out three glasses, and did a smell and sip of each, and f..ck me if they didn't all taste almost the same!
After a few more tastes, I concluded that one was a tiny bit darker and had a different mouthfeel than the other two, so it was obviously the Coopers. Funny thing is, I think ther Coopers tastes better.
I realise that they were both bitters, but I would have expected there to have been more variation in taste than that. Perhaps this will show up as they age.
Lesson? I spent twice as much on a Caffrey's clone that tastes not much different to a bog standard Coopers.
The case of the mixed up bitters
Nothing wrong with Coopers mate. I did the Bitter last batch (was it original series bitter?). Found that it came out really dark, almost like a dark ale.
