Hi all, just started homebrewing and im on to my 2nd batch.
I'm making a stout with 1 x Muntons Irish Style Stout Kit with 1kg Brewcraft Brown Ale No.72 as recommended by the man at local HBS.
The problem is the instructions say to only use returnable beer bottles as "non returnable bottles may not be adequate to withstand conditioning pressure". What are returnable bottles? I was going to use Coopers PET bottles, are these adequate?
PET bottles are fine as are any glass bottle with either a twist top neck or the old style ones. Also, in this case size doesn't matter - be it tallie or stubby.

mate these are basically what commercial beers come in these days.
They are your brown tally or stubby bottle which have been redesigned by bean counters ie why spend money makeing a good one which lasts forever when a once only use light weight one will do. They are basically thinner and not as strong as they used to be.
Coopers have new thicker reuseable bottles avaiable for the home brewer, if you want/need to brew in glass, ask you local home brew shop.
Pet bottles wont have a problem with the "conditioning " pressure.
sorry to try and currect you all, but im shure that the term returnable bottles is for the older crowne seal tallies, which have much thicker glass than the regular bottles these days. the old bottles had written on them that they remain the property of the brewerey, and the brewerey used to reuse them themselves.
but needless to say, the newer bottles are fine, untill you over carbonate them!
