Overnight my first brew (Coopers Lager at 21-22 degrees) has started bubbling nicely, but there is one really minor problem. My airlock is only about half as full as it should be (ie. not very!) because some of the water has bubbled out the top. I tried to refill it without taking it out, but the water just blew back out within a minute (must be the pressure difference), so i have just placed a crown seal over the top of the airlock, which lifts up to release gas but doesnt seem to let any water escape.
Is this the proper way to deal with the airlock, or should I take it out and refill it (and possibly have the water blown out again!)
Yo evanmit - as long as you have some water in the airlock it is preventing air from entering your fermenter. If it was dry and completely lacking water then it would not be working as an air lock. I notice what you describe with my brews, by the end of a few weeks there is not much left in the air lock. Anyway - happy bubbling....
