how long do hops keep?

Post by Simo »

g'day.
For my latest brew I used 12g of Hallertau hops but my LBS only carries pellets in 25g bags. This means that I've now got 13g of hops left over. They are still in the original foil lined bag and I have put them in an airtight zip-lock bag in the fridge. How long can i expect these to keep under these conditions?

cheers.

I recon they will last a good few months if airtight and sealed. I give them at least 3-6.

hops last for years if stored correctly.
dark and cold. seal them in a bag and put then in the fridge, the only thing that happens over time is the acids degrade so you will need to add a little more after a few months.

yep, in the freezer, keeps for at least a few months.

squeezing all the air out of your airtight bag should help a little as well.

Fresh hops in the freezer should last ~1yr...

As has been said, airtight bags are the go... if you cant smell them then they are in good storage conditions!
