I'm sitting here, catching up on a few days' worth of posts and having a couple of beers.


I decided it was a good evening for a couple of dark beers, so pulled a Monteith's Black Beer (from NZ) out of the fridge, along with a Carlton Black Dark Ale.

Having drunk the Monteith's (5.2% and like the little brother of Cooper's Best Extra Stout (i.e. very nice)), I opened and poured the Carlton.

This must surely be the VB of dark beers. It's lacking flavour and body, so much so that you'd almost think it was brewed with a lager yeast if it didn't say on the label that it was a "top-fermented ale using old style yeast (origins dating back to 1835)".

But all the pieces fell into place when I read the next bit of the label: "The fruity ale flavours complement the Pride of Ringwood hopping, which makes Carlton Black rich and easy to drink.

Has anyone else had the misfortune to waste their money on this "VB Dark"?

I tried a glass of it last weekend. I was away from home and in a club for lunch and noticed it for the first time.
Normally I'll have a Tooheys Old in those circumstances but it was not on tap at this particular establishment up Noosa way.

I'm a bit of a fan of the dark brews and most of my brews these days are pretty black looking. Current favourite is Morgans Ironbark with some extra liquid dark malt. When I open one of these I knock it back reasonably quickly. A tallie just doesn't last long.

Well, the Carlton Black lasted right through lunch. Only reason I finished it off was because I paid good money for it. Never again though.
At least the Tooheys is half-way pleasant, if a little watery. Carlton Black is half-way awful. Shoulda known.

I don't "mind" it on tap. Never seen it in the bottle though.

Mind you I don't mind most beers on tap if the situation is right.

I find it sweeter and a bit thinner than Old and doesn't seem to have as much of the grainy roasty flavour but all in all not toooooooo bad.

It's got nothing on the Coopers stout and dark ale but I would recommend trying it because I know a few Old lovers who have made the change to this stuff.

Oliver,

I couldn't agree withn you more. Carlton Black is the old Resch's Black and it is peurile!

As everyone knows I am a great lover of Tooheys Old (which IMHO is the epitome of Dark Ales) and Carlton is enough to turn a man off ever wanting to drink dark ales again in his life time.

I don't know whetehr it is the POR hops or what but it is absolute cr..p

Personally i prefer clear, golden beers like lagers, bitters or draughts. But a few weeks ago i went past me local bottle shop and decided to by a 'Carlton Black'. Personally i thought it was like drinking a big cold coffee filled with alcohol.
Primary: Coopers Bavarian Lager.
Secondary: Empty
Bottled and slammin' down: Coopers Lager, Coopers Draught and Coopers Bitter

Next Project: Some type of clone
