Hop ryzomes
Hop ryzomes
Just ordered mine up for this spring. 3 cascades and 3 willamettes. Guess they should arrive in April, but I won't be able to plant till May. I also studied up and found that I live in hop world. Washington state produces 25% of the hops on the planet. Also learned that hops are deadly to dogs, so I'll be fencing my little buddies out.
Re: Hop ryzomes
Washington has great exposure to long summer days and a perfect climate for hops. I've spent a lot of time there. I'd be growing hops too if i lived there! I have no doubt that you'll be very successful.
Jeff.
Re: Hop ryzomes
I'll see how these go. I might have to add a few varieties down the road
Re: Hop ryzomes
You'll have a shed load of hops on hand in a few years with 3 plants of each.
I have 1 Saaz and 1 Tettnang and can't get through the yield in a year.
You better plan to upscale production

Re: Hop ryzomes
I ordered 3 of each to ensure at least one lives. I have lots of room for hops, so if I have to toss some its ok
Re: Hop ryzomes
I have just potted my first two rhizomes.
One Saaz and one cascade.
I'll be keeping them sheltered from frost for a while but I have to admit I'm pretty excited.
Hopefully they will grow ok in the pots.

2000 light beers from home.
Re: Hop ryzomes
Hey Rob, did you get those from the eBay guys selling 'em for $12 each? I just had a look and he doesn't have Cascade or Saaz listed...I guess he may have run out. I'd love to get my hands on a Cascade rhizome, and maybe something like Hallertau or Hersbrucker for my weissbeirs.
Re: Hop ryzomes
No I didn't get them from that guy, I did get them off eBay though, I actually bought the Saaz and then saw the guy had cascade so I asked him to double up for me.
His name was amnibus, although from what I can see, no longer selling.
The roweville guy was going to be my next port of call but like I said I think I would be over stretching my hop growing skills since this is my first year.
I have two more of the black disposable kegs that you are welcome to if you want to try "pot" hops.

Re: Hop ryzomes
Thanks mate, I'll take you up on those kegs and keep an eye out for a Cascade rhizome. I found a place on the web selling them for $30 so that's the mark to beat at the mo.
EDIT: Sorted, Cascade, Chinook and Hersbrucker on the way...

Re: Hop ryzomes
Awesome!!! Can't wait for next years brew days at the pub when we are using home grown hops..
Re: Hop ryzomes
There's a guy on that other forum selling some complete root systems from his hops that he's had to dig up...he's just up the road from me, and I'm grabbing a Hallertau and a massive Columbus. The Columbus looks like it'll have at least a dozen rhizomes on it. Anyone want a rhizome? If I get a few takers I'll just split the cost up, will be less than $10 each I'm guessing.
Re: Hop ryzomes
There is just something cool about getting home to a couple of sample home brews and a hop rhizome at your door step!!!!
Thanks Weizgei..

Re: Hop ryzomes
Nearly as cool as sneaking up to a bloke's front porch, giving a couple of suspicious sideways glances, then racking off with two black kegs he'd left out there? Say hi to the neighbours for me...

Re: Hop ryzomes

Cascade. I won't get many this year, though I have learnt a lot and have some improvements to make for next year.

Re: Hop ryzomes
Nice. Just potted Victoria and Chinook.
