Currently drinking a bitter brewed recently which I called my 'hallertau special'. 90% pale ale malt, 10% munich 1. Magnum for bittering and hallertau for flavour and aroma. 1060 OG & 48 IBU. 1469 yeast cake.
Awesome, nice and clean flavour and bitterness.
Have already made plans for a repeat brew.
Cheers

Visited a new-ish local brewery, Mornington Peninsula Brewery, tonight. Their brown ale was very nice, the porter pretty great, APIA was top notch (by Australian standards), kolsch was bit meh but I think that was because the sorachi ace used might not be to my taste and I hated the wit (but I can't recall ever liking a wit so it could very well be pretty good). Worth a visit if you get the chance.

Visited Dan Murphy's this arvo. Slab of Sol echos for the lady, and 10 mixed beers from Australia and the UK for me. Currently drinking a Murray's Pale Ale. Very nice drop. It was a geyser when I opened the bottle, but poured nicely and tastes great.

Just got home from a weekend in Sydney. Been busy, grandson's 1st birthday, son's 30th birthday, and a Valentine's Day wedding this morning.

Imbibed some imported Czech Budvars and Urquells over the weekend.

I had previously thought the Urquell was the better of the two when I had consumed them on seperate occasions. However, this time, the Urquell was certainly a great BoPils, good maltiness, and plenty of Saaz hop aroma and flavour, but all of it was just a tad too obvious and over the top, not quite in balance.

On the other hand, the Budvar was a brilliant BoPils. Beautiful smooth malt quality, perfectly balanced with Saaz hops flavour, aroma, and lingering cleansing bitterness. It just seemed to be a more harmonious whole. I don't see how it could be improved or bettered.

Both are great BoPils, but the Budvar just seemed to have knitted all the elements together in the best way possible. 5 stars to the Urquell, 5½ stars to the Budvar on the Oliver & Geoff scale.

Oh, and a Franziskaner Dunkelweizen as a goodnighter went down very very nicely too.

Like Warra, I had a Franziskaner Dunkelweizen on the weekend. I agree with his assessment. I drank it after a couple Brewdog Punk IPAs. I've had this beer a few times before and found it a bit hit and miss, most likely due to poor handling. The beers on the weekend were the freshest and best Punk IPAs I've had.

Aaaaaahhhrrr,

Just had a Grolsch lager. Donated by my son, so no choice about it. Unfortunately, it's BUL.

Distinctly underwhelming. There's mild malt, but the hop aroma has nothing of the quality of the Urquell or Budvar. The bitterness is also less. It's not too bad a drink up front, but from about half way through the tasting experience it starts to fall apart. It's all over the shop, the malt quality is not sustained, and the hop quality and bitterness also leaves a lot to be desired, and it's nothing like you expect a good lager to be. Pity, Grolsch used to be one of my favourite Dutch brews.

1½ stars on the O & G scale.

I agree with the Budvar vs Urquell comments 100% Warra.

Tonight I'm drinking a couple of St. Bernardus, thanks to Darrenp for picking them up for me.

The Prior 8 was a bit ordinary but the Abt 12 was beautiful.

Murphy's Irish Stout. Totally quaffable, but just seems to lack that je ne sais quoi wow factor.
Incidentally, it is brewed in Scotland, how Irish is that (not)?

Had an Innes & Gunn Scottish beer last night.

Quite enjoyed it, and found it interesting, as something quite different from what I've consumed previously. However, I can't see myself ever wanting to brew a Scottish ale.

It's described on the bottle as a "smooth beer with hints of toffee, vanilla and oak".
That's a fair enough description.

Tried Stefano's Pilsner from Mildura Brewery, has a subtle hop flavour with a nice, not over the top bitterness.
Far better than the Hahn White that followed.

I might see if they have it on tap soon. Last time I stopped at a micro in the barossa they wanted $7.00 a pint (that was five years ago) just imagine what that's worth now. Mildura is not the barossa I know, but just as close for me.
Anyhoo, back OT.
Drinking a magnum - cascade apa, with am IBU of 50 ish. I like it, which is good because the next 4 brews of mine at least are along the same OG-IBU lines with different hops etc, :)~
Cheers

edit : mildura is not the barossa

Was in DM tonight and saw the Hahn White in a wine bottle.

Seriously WTF are they thinking? I cringed at the thought of it.

Drinking a Sunner Kolsch. Happy because it's not much different from mine. (from what I can tell)

Next is a Timmermans Framboise.

Next 3 nights is a carton of Sundown while camping :D

Cheers, Mat.
