Hey Guys,
If I was to have a hop addition of say 10gms @ 10mins I could also do 5gms @ 20mins or 20gms @ 5mins to give me the same IBU.
Now I'm assuming the 20 min addition would give more flavour and the 5min would be more aroma but to what extent? Would the difference be noticable?
Cheers, Mat.
Hops Schedule
Re: Hops Schedule
I generally do a 20 min and 0 min addition in simple beers. Where i want a lot more flavour and aroma i throw in some at 10 mins as well and possibly dry hop.
20 min = flavour
0 min = aroma.
That's a very simplified explanation as the 20 min addition will still give you some aroma but 20 min is about the peak of flavour and 0 min is ideal for aroma but will still give you some flavour.
Check out this graph for the basics - Link
I personally believe that you get more aroma if you wait 10 mins after turning the boil off and letting the hops steep for 10-15 min then rapidly chilling the wort.

Re: Hops Schedule
Excellent, Thanks Drs. That has answered my question completely.
However.... This little comment in the link can be confusing
Seems all ass about???
As you can see, peak AROMA is about 7 minutes after the start of the boil.
Peak FLAVOR is about 20 minutes into the boil and peak BITTERNESS is arrived at about 60 minutes.
After reading it a few times I can see what they mean but it may confuse some by saying "start" of the boil
or is it just me???

Re: Hops Schedule
I have looked at this graph many times but never read the comment. You are right - the comment is confusing. Should read something more like - peak aroma is achieved by adding hops 7 minutes before the end of the boil.
Re: Hops Schedule
Same here Earle, I've looked at that graph a few times and never noticed the comment. I even looked at that graph when looking for the answer to the question that Matr asked in OP and never noticed the start/finish confusion. Brain was obviously looking at numbers only, and not the detail.earle wrote:I have looked at this graph many times but never read the comment. You are right - the comment is confusing. Reminds me of a Ronnie Barker sketch from years ago, with muddled words that made complete sense (transcripts can be found on net).
Nothing interesting to see here, move along.
